Moon and Happy New Year

Oh my! How did this one escape me? Such a crazy movie with just one lead actor! It was pulled off really well though. Story line was very believable and kept you on edge.

We are introduced to clones of the same person which complicate the matter even further. Sam Rockwell pulls this all off splendidly with a masterclass of his own. Kudos to him. Together with the voice of Kevin Spacey as GERTY, this is a classic sci-fi flick that will be loved by people for years to come.

I hear there is talk of a sequel to the movie which could definately work the way this ended.

edit

It has been a thrilling year for movies, and with me watching one every 3 days. I hope you will join me in 2013 for more. In the meantime, I wish all of you Seasons Greetings and a Happy 2013!

Compliance

Remarkable and crazy film based on a true story on a man, who on 70 occasions, called various fast food chains in the USA with the end result of someone becoming a victim of a sexual assault.

The whole story is mind boggling and you wonder how stupid some people could be. They all thought when they were speaking to a police officer at the other end of the phone.

What's even more shocking is that these occurrences actually happened! We are told that man took advantage of the fast food restaurants as he believed the workers there were just plain stupid.

It is quite uncomfortable to watch the whole assault on the poor young girl take place but also crazy at the same time.

6.5

Life Of Pi

Extremely pleased I did not read the book; the film was an enriching delight for the eyes and mind.

The story is very gripping and plays with the intellect and the end result is a very uplifting and spiritual moral.

The 3D was good, but it was not necessary; I may have enjoyed even more if I saw it in 2D which I plan to do soon anyway.

Richard Parker the tiger is a treat to watch and so is the young Piscine (Pi). I am expecting this to do very wall at the forthcoming awards ceremony's.

One of the best movies of 2012.

Touching The Void

Yes, I've just watched it after 9 years, but its better late than never!

I always wanted to see it, but just never got round to it. As my daughter did a project at school on the subject recently, I watched it with her just now, on Christmas Eve.

It's a remarkable true story of survival but not just a standard one. There are all types of emotions involved and it just needs to be seen. Cinematography is amazing.

Watching this in front of a fire makes you feel so thankful.

8

Deadfall

Decided to give a watch due the talented cast; Eric Bana, Olivia Wilde and Kate Mara who has such a cute nose!

The story starts off really well and grips you straight away. Olivia Wilde is in a role not seen of her before so I had great expectations.

After the half way point, it became quite obvious what was going to happen which let it down a little bit for me. I found the ending unsatisfying.

7 Psychopaths

An interesting movie, which had so much potential.

I thought Colin Farrell was miscast, but Christopher Walken's performance made up for it.

What started off as an interesting, soon became quite dragged out and the pace started to slow in the middle. It then went to plain silly; but that was the point; it was a movie within a movie if you know what I mean?

It gave the audience something to think about, but I left the cinema feeling unsatisfied. Cannot understand the high ratings on IMDB.

From me, just a 6...just about.

Silver Linings Playbrook

Romcom with a difference...a love story of 2 "crazy" people; one has Bipolar and the other has severe depression.

Bradley Cooper is full of pain and expressions and Robert De Niro is back to what he does best. Jennifer Lawrence is superb and vulnerable; have known it since watching The Hunger Games.

Dialogue is witty and character development is interesting. It is refreshing to see this type of movie in this particular genre.

A dark horse for best film of the year at the awards?

Talaash

Highly anticipated thriller from Aamir Khan which grips you right from the start.

I have to be honest, but after the opening scene, I was able to decipher which way this film was going and got to the plot quite soon. The twist was still surprising and was enjoyable. I felt the ending was a little rushed but the rest of the film was nicely paced. Few plotholes too which let it down a little.

Not as classy as Vidya Balan's Kahaani which was spectacular except the last few scenes.

Aamir did well though, just wished they centered the movie more around him, his feelings and thoughts.

8

Madagascar 3

Brilliant animation, but at a lazy story that does not offer anything new.

Like sequels, they have a lot to live up to. The first movie was very good. Unfortunately I haven't seen the 2nd, but I doubt if it was better than the 1st.

The children liked it and it's on at home all the time!

Red Lights

Been on my list to watch. Brought to the top after a friend recommended it solely for Cilian Murphy's acting. I agree, he acted very well. Also in the cast were Elizabeth Olsen, Sigourney Weaver and Robert De Niro. De Niro's was in a bit of a misfit role in my opinion!

The movie has a weak-ish plot but it is most definately watchable and does keep the viewer wanting to find out more. There are plot holes galore, but the twist is quite incredible actually and I didn't see it coming; normally a good guesser!

I feel it has been a little under-rated and probably deserved more mention and coverage.

End of Watch

Jake and Michael have the most amazing on-screen chemistry that makes the viewers believe they're truly best friends and police partners. The way the script was written allowed David Ayer to elicit an incredible range of emotion from the viewers.

It's hilariously funny during car scenes between Jake and Michael, playing on relatable awkward topics of dating, and other things best friends would joke about, yet incredibly serious, showing just how intense and dangerous police officers' jobs in South Central LA can be. The use of Jake's hand-held camera gives a Paranormal Activity feeling (without the headache) that adds to the "realness" of the film.

I highly recommend this film and challenge anyone to not be completely moved by the end of it.

9

Hope Springs

Trailers looked very promising and it looked very funny.

Instead, It turned out to be a drama that was quite serious on the topic of rekindling a marriage. A few scenes looked uncomfortable and due to the Meryl Street and Tommy Lee Jones having a troubled relationship as it was, dialogues were few and far between.

I did not enjoy this as much as I had hoped.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan

Finally here we have it!

Yash Chopra's final movie; unfortunately he died days before it's release which was quite tragic really. As harsh as it sounds, it may also have cashed in due to the sad news and the hype.

I know many people were looking forward to seeing Shahrukh Khan in a romantic role; he has done very well in similar roles in the past. My conclusion is that he does not fail to disappoint. For me, the pick of the bunch was Anushka Sharma; I think she is destined for great things. Unfortunately, Katrina Kaif was a little bit of a let down, I could not take her seriously with those horrid botox lips; the gaps in her acting skills were visible.

The story was nothing special; nothing really new to offer. The only good thing were the contrasting halves. Made it feel you watched 2 movies in 1 sitting! Cinematography and songs kept it interesting.

I would not class this as a full on love story; it failed to tug my heartstrings and it was more of a comedy drama. Flaws galore, but then which bollywood movie doesn't have those?

Would I watch again? Probably not. Do I regret watching it? No.

A solid 7 - but just about.

The Housemaid

Korean thriller based upon a 1960s classic (which I am yet to see).

Cinematography was spectacular as where acting performances. I find the story a little slow to start, but picked up half way through.

Not as tense as I thought it would be, but the ending made up for it. Quite spectacular and fitting. Not everyone would understand it though.

7

Diary of a Wimpy Kid - Dog Days

After watching part 1 and 2 with my children, we were looking forward to watching the third installment.

I have to say though, that now that the 2 main leads are older, I found this movie less funnier. My kids agreed too, my 5 year old got bored after a while!

Don't know if the next installment can work upon these issues? Will have to wait and see!

5

Son Of Sardar

Colourful, Funny and Punjabi; a good combination to brighten up a dull and miserable day. Not ashamed to admit, but saw this FIRST over Jab Tak Hai Jaan (which I will be watching tomorrow).

Watch this with an open mind and you will enjoy Ajay Devgan, Sonakshi Sinha and Juhi Chawla give pretty good performances. Definately leave the brain home for this one!

There are some nice foot-tapping scores as well as a range of emotions.

Good fun to have spent a few hours.

Trishna

Tragic love story featuring Freida Pinto of Slumdog Millionaire fame.

It is set in India and was funded with National Lottery money with BBC producing. Cinematography is dazzling and its filmed beautifully. As for the story, there will be some people that could relate to it.

It's quite intense and harrowing at times but you could sense that the end was going to be messy.

Ms Pinto gave a good performance, I am quite impressed with her.

6.5

Argo

A truly spectacular and gripping movie about US Embassy workers that were taken hostage in Iran and their amazing rescue by a member of CIA. The events are loosley based on a true story.

It manages to recreate this historical event with vivid attention to detail and finely wrought characters.

It is a must-see and surely has oscar nominations written over it. I throughly enjoyed it. The last film that wowed me like this was The Imposter which I watched some months ago.

Watch it - you won't be disappointed...I guarantee it!

Aein

Translated into Lover. This is a 2005 korean film.

A very plain and simple romantic movie. The chemistry between the two main leads is very strong and they are a very cute couple I must admit.

Was not really let down by the ending; the morals shown throughout remained maintained and I am pleased not to have seen a cliched movie.

6.5

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Only just got round to watching this.

Really excellent performances from Dame Judi Dench and Bill Nighy. Very simple story and interesting character development.

Thought Dev Patel was a little annoying and his accent was horrible! His relationship with his girlfriend didn't really fit into the indian image but I suppose it was there really for western audiences.

Refreshing to see India, just wish they showed more of it!.

Skyfall

Highly anticipated film of 2012 was a bit of a let down unfortunately.

There was so much hype and I was expecting a very slick Bond movie.

Instead I found it quite boring and lacking action and style. It had good potential, and got interesting when they introduced the audience to Javier Bardem.

The ending dragged and it was all quite shabby. Bond girls lacked chemistry and the funny moments were not that funny either.

Rust and Bone

Phenomenal french film which I just happened to come across as a matter of chance. There are so many positives about this film and the story is very touching and emotional.

Character development is excellent and I'm pretty sure Marion Cotilard will get an Oscar in 2013 for her performance.

Was lucky to watch a special screening; it goes on general release next month.

9

Tuesday, 23 October 2012

Baraka

A non-narrative 1992 documentary which means blessing in Arabic.

It is a stunning collection of expertly captured scenes of human life and I'm sure when I watch this again, I will take away something different from it.

This is something all of you should experience.

Taken 2

Another sequel and another very weak plot i'm afraid to say. It was just not even on par with the first one, which, whilst unbelievable, was still very slick.

This movie appeared to have been made without much effort or money. Even Istanbul, which is a beautiful city was portrayed as a shabby, gross place which I was not happy about.

Story was incredibly silly and plot holes everywhere. Totally ruined it for me. And worse of all, there will be a third instalment!

5

Chinese Torture Chamber

Silly Chinese Cat III film.

Too unrealistic and very cheesy and corny - it was so silly, it was laughable.

Not really much to say; I have the second installment to watch next! Perhaps I will allow a long time before watching it!

3

Saturday, 13 October 2012

Chaos

No, this is not the Jason Statham one, but the earlier film in 2005 of the same name.

It's a brutal torture film that is just 74 minutes long. Its a simple straightforward plot but with a bizarre ending.

Virtually identical to The Last House On The Left which I did not know prior to watching it.

Some disturbing scenes but I have seen a lot worse.

6

Thursday, 11 October 2012

English Vinglish

Sridevi's comeback film after 15 years! Wow, it was so amazing to see her for the first time on the silver screen.

Many Bollywood actresses have had comeback movies, Madhuri Dixit, Karishma Kapoor, but this was the BEST.

Such a sweet simple and easy, genuine movie was a feast for the eyes. It was portrayed very realistically and you immediately felt at ease watching Sridevi and her commanding performance.

Amitabh Bachchan's short cameo was a nice touch. Also the children were excellent supporting.

Look forward to seeing more of her :D

8

Cannibal Vegetarian

Croatian film about a naughty doctor performing illegal abortions.

Thought the plot sounded gruesome but it was more political than anything. Not very gory and gruesome. Acting was mediocre.

Could have been a lot more dramatic and the script had great potential.

Instead it dragged on a little and was uninteresting at times.

5

Tuesday, 2 October 2012

Looper

Was looking forward to see what the fuss was all about so had high hopes.

A good story with lots of potential but I felt there were far too many loopholes (no pun intended!)

The ending was a big let down and sort of defeated the object of the movie. I came out of the cinema feeling let down. Surely the people who have rated this highly do not watch enough films!

6

Cocktail

Saif Ali Khan's rise to stardom in the last decade has been phenomenal. He has bagged a few good films and most important of all, will soon be the husband of Kareena Kapoor.

After the last few failures like Love Aaj Kal and Agent Vinod, I was thinking this was going to be the same or worse. And, I was right.

The story offers no meat on the bones and Saif is disappointing once again. Deepika's performance was interesting and certainly Diana Penty has good potential.

Overall, very mediocre.

Ek Tha Tiger

Much hyped Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer which has broken many box-office records. It probably has to do with their first film together since the pair's break-up and the masses wanted to see them on the silver screen again.

Salman's acting was actually bearable for a change and he seemed genuine and down to earth, unlike the last movie, Bodyguard which was so stupid.

Yes there were flaws in this and was overlong, but it was not that bad. Once you find out the twist half way through, its fairly predictable.

The main song, "Mashallah", that was probably a major hand in the film's viewing numbers was right at the end when the credits rolled!

6

Hell's Ground (Zibahkhana)

Pakistan's first gore film! Naturally, I was intrigued and didn't need to even download the subtitles as urdu is my mother tongue.

What can I say? I thought a pakistani horror film was quite refreshing despite the bad acting and script.

Its similar to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but basically about a bunch of young people going on a road trip. You can guess what happens next...

The one complaint I would make is the english translated title. Zibahkhana means Slaughter House. Bit different from Hells Ground!

A 6 from me.

Monday, 24 September 2012

Barfii

India's entry to the Oscars for 2013.

A very different kind of story that is genuine and believable.

The visuals and cinematography is spectacular - Darjeeling is gorgeous! Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra should be applauded for their portrayals. While we have seen similar themes in western movies, there are very few of these types of roles available in hindi cinema.

Yes, there were some bits that could have been skipped, but overall, its a very heart-warming and tender story which can make you laugh one minute and cry the next.

8

Livide

French supernatural horror flick which I had fairly high expectations for but thought it was a bit of a let down. It was a story from the producers of "Inside" which was very gory and gripping and throughly enjoyable.

Although there was plenty of blood, it failed to create that horror feeling from what I thought, was a very promising start. Typical of french films, the endings are quite metaphorical.

I found Chloe Coulloud, the french lead actress, with plenty of talent nevertheless.

The Sweeney

Don't know why this seems to have got slated; must have been the lovers of the old TV serial as they were not impressed with it not resembling it or doing it justice.

Well, this is 2012 so obviously it's going to be different! I thought the action sequences were well thought out and engaging.

Ben Drew from Plan B makes his debut; the only thing that was off-putting was his "afro-caribbean" accent! And everyone likes Ray Winstone!

I do recommend a watch!

7

Lawless

Once again, another movie that is based on a true story.

It's a little slow to start with and Shia LeBoeouf and Tom Hardy deliver excellent performances, as does Guy Pearce, who in my opinion, is highly underrated as an actor.

There is only so much one can do to jazz up a true story; there are limitations and thus I felt the ending was a little bit of a let down.

Still, a very good film which I enjoyed a lot.

7

The Imposter

Mind-blowing documentary-thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout.

A cleverly made film that keeps you engaged. The film-making is extremely intelligent and will keep you gripped.

Based on a true story; the tale is sure to have you hooked!

8.5

Total Recall

Entertaining Sci-fi thriller based on the old Schwartznegger film. Ideas from it lifted out and given a new spin on the story.

Colin Farrell was convincing as Quaid and equally, so was Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale. My only problem with the film was the story. It could have been so much darker and deeper and the enemy could have been played by an A Lister.

Visually, it is superb so techno-fans are in for a treat. Just don't expect too much from the story.

6.5

Expendables 2

Exhilarating action piece with 9 stars in. I don't need to name them all!

It's your typical revenge action plot with cool stunts and mindless action. People have really enjoyed this but I thought it was quite mediocre. Camera work was untidy in my opinion.

It's a good time pass but nothing more.

5.5

The Bourne Legacy

Interesting side story which is like a totally new film and totally unconnected to any of the Bourne Films. By watching this, you will not feel as though you missed out on the story if you did not see the other Bourne movies.

Rachel Weisz is very good; nice to see her on screen after such a long time.

The newcomer, Jeremy Renner makes a good hero in his first movie in a lead role. He certainly has potential for similar movies. There could be another spin off to see this film, but would prefer it not to have the "Bourne" title in; I think it was purely a marketing ploy to get people interested!

7

Sunday, 12 August 2012

Magic Mike

The only reason we watched this was because there was nothing else on!

It was actually alright and Channing Tatum has found some roles he is comfortable doing. He certainly has found his feet. Matthew McConaughy is really good as always! Although there are some uncomfortable scenes for straight males to watch it really is not that bad.

My main criticism is that Channing's character was a little under developed and his future goal was a let down. They could have done something better with the story.

6

Ted

Hilarious capers about a man's. Est friend who is a teddy bear that comes to life.

There are vulgar jokes and scenes which would not have been funny if performed by a normal person, but because a teddy was doing them it was amusing.

I think the story was dragged out and diverted by a silly sub-plot which ruined it a little. But if you are looking for some laughs then this is for you.

7

The Dark Knight Rises

Had such high hopes about this movie and it surely was a feast for the eyes.

I was expecting Anne Hathaway's part to be very tedious, but intact, it was not that bad.

It's one of the finest trilogies of modern times in my opinion.

Yes there were a few flaws if you are a fan of the comic books, but for a regular person like me, it was entertaining and engaging.

Could the series now spin off to "Robin" ? We wait and see.

8.5

Salmon Fishing In The Yemen

I'm also a big fan of Emily Blunt so had to watch this too.

It's an unusual concept but the movie is based on a novel. I am not sure how closely it resembles to the story as you all know by now i'm not a big reader!

Emily was good; I just wish the chemistry between her and Ewan McGregor was more special. At least it was not your typical Hollywood movie ;)

More of a feel good movie than a Romcom.

6

Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World

I'm a big fan of Steve Carrell so I had to watch this...

It's an unlikely pairing with Keira Knightley but I thought it worked quite well.

I would describe it more as a black comedy and it was quite serious at times. Of course there were a few quirky moments, but do not watch this expecting all out laughs.

This is a good film and is different to other "end of the world" films in my opinion.

7

The Amazing Spiderman

Yet another movie from the popular franchise.

I was told this was going to be different and that it would feature a new story/twist. We saw it in 2D. You ought to be well aware that I hate wearing those glasses!

Anyhow, 45 minutes passed and I am thinking to myself that there is absolutely nothing new about this movie. Its basically a remade version of the very first spiderman movie that came out in 2002 but featuring different characters?! What the hell?

Cannot understand why so many people are raving about the film?

6 for decent special effects.

Your Sister's Sister

Surprise choice for me. I had planned to watch The Amazing Spiderman but we chose this instead.

Again, Emily Blunt starring in the lead role. Seemed quite a quirky storyline. Just when I thought this was a getting a bit cliche, a very clever twist emerged.

Not seen any of the other supporting actors. They were indeed very refreshing and added a whole new dimension to the story.

Learnt afterward that it was filmed in just 12 days which is an achievement in itself!

Good comedy drama here.

7

The 5 year Engagement

Who doesn't like Emily Blunt?

I like her a lot, but I felt she was not the right sort of character to be in this movie. It was produced by Jason Segel who was her co-star and was the "star" of the show. This was HIS film!

Some very funny comic moments including the sesame street scene. Lots of blatant moments which ruined it a little for me; a lack of subtlety in my opinion.

A tad over long, but I didn't find it boring. Others could though...

6

Fast Girls

British movie about a hopeful girls team who attempt to win Gold for the UK in the relay game.

Not a classic game by all means, but something quite different and unusual.

Acting performances were strong and the movie release was timed well especially with the London Olympics just round the corner.

Nice, feel-good film with plenty of grit!

7

Teri Meri Kahaani

Was expecting big things from this movie.

Instead it was quite average. Tried and tested formula used yet again with a slight difference.

Must say I was impressed with the music and Shahid Kapoor. However, this movie did no wonders for Priyanka Chopra's career. She was not put through any tests by the director it seems!

I guess it will be a long wait to the next bollywood film!

5

21 Jump Street

Had a rubbish day, so felt like some laughs so saw the above.

I really like Jonah Hill and this was surprisingly good. For me though, I thought Channing Tatum found his forte; he did exceedingly well in a comical role.

Some big loud laughs and it was not even crude or distasteful. Ice Cube was cool!

OK, it got a little bit silly towards the end, but the surprise cameo from Johnny Depp was a nice touch, especially as he was involved in the original series on which this movie was based!

7.5

Rock Of Ages

Not really might type of movie to be honest. I tagged along with my friend who really wanted to watch it and actually, I secretly liked the trailer; cast seemed very good!

The story was infact, quite good and light hearted. The two main leads I had not seen before and I thought they were quite talented.

Tom Cruise was very vivid and I just wish we saw more of Alec Baldwin. Can't believe how much Catherine Zeta Jones has aged!

Highly entertaining, and the songs are brilliant; really reminds of you of the 80s.

7

Prometheus 3D

The only reason I saw this in 3D was there was only 2 showings during the day which I could not get to so had no option. I find wearing the glasses incredibly uncomfortable as you know!

Well, the opening effects were really good, but they slowly lost their charm and there was no 3D fun yet again. It seems a rip off to pay these prices if there are not going to be any effects!

The story was alright I suppose. Again I found Charlize Theron a little bland. None of the other actors really stood out either; they were all "wooden."

Seems like the ending has been left open for a sequel...don't you hate it when they do that?

6

Snow White And The Huntsman

Been seeing the trailers for over 6 months and was quite looking forward to seeing the "darkness" in this tale like we say in Alice In Wonderland recently.

I thought the visual effects were really good, but the problem obviously with the movie is knowing what the ending is going to be. I felt there could have been a better choice for Snow White.

I had totally forgotton about the dwarfs and when they arrived in the movie, the screen burst into life.

I felt Charlize Theron was a little OTT.

Overall not bad. 6.5

The Dictator

This is the type of movie that one is going to love or really hate.

For me it was the former; I thought it was funny and some of the bits were indeed very funny and made me gag.

I agree with some reviews in that it was seen as quite silly and it lacked a proper story, but come on, we are talking about Sacha Baron Cohen...hardly going to be a story is there? LOL

7

All In Good Time

Sorry for the lack of posts. My new job has been hogging my time!

Anyhow, this was an english hindi film shot in the UK if you know what I mean?!

It touched on a subject matter which was quite unique and not seen or done before. It was very funny and quite engaging. I felt however that the "sexual" aspect of the story was a little over the top and probably spoiled the otherwise very good drama.

Ekk Main Aur Ekk Tu

...or One You and One Me.

A bollywood romantic comedy starring the unlikely pairing of Imran Khan and Bebo (Kareena Kapoor).

A typical story for me; but the ending is a break from the norm of usual bollywood endings, which I found a little surprising.

The best thing of the movie is the chemistry between the 2 which I think really worked. They should do more movies together.

I wasn't overly impressed with the music however; thought it was very average.

6

Safe

Another Jason Statham fast paced story.

Has all the usual common items; fast car chases, guns, kicks and cheesy lines.

One thing I did find surprising was the amount of subtitles; it could nearly pass as a foreign film there are that many!

I did not find the story that gripping; but then again, Jason Statham movies aren't really there for the story; its all about the action!

I wish there was more character development between the 2 main characters.

Not bad.

I Stand Alone

Disturbing french movie which plays on your mind.

Most of the movie is narrated meaning there is very little dialogue. There are a lot of subtitles to take in which spoil the enjoyment a little.

I thought it was well made, but felt at times that it was a little slow.

There was one shocking moment in it; other than that it is not that painful to watch.

Not bad, but i've seen better.

Avengers Assemble

A lot of hype and talk surrounding this movie. However, I found it overdrawn and just too long. Loki does not really seem to be a really bad guy.

Did not really see what the fuss was all about. In my opinion, a very mediocre movie. I cannot understand how it has managed to break so many records - clever marketing it seems...

6

Feed

An interesting film about a strange fetish; the clue is in the title.

I feel the movie had a lot of potential but the most was not made out of it. Acting performances were not the best so it was hard to sympathise with the characters.

Not as gross as I was expecting; doesn't make you faint!

5

Suburb Murder

Sorry for the lack of posts over the last few days.

This was a crazy low budget Chinese Cat III film which was quite tame comparing to some of the stuff I've already seen.

The plot was silly and effects were not very realistic. Not the best of story lines either.

One to avoid.

Battle Royale

The new hunger games is based loosley on this movie although there are many differences.

While this was a good film, I feel it lacked character development. I think the main reason it was made was for the gore and action and basically kids, killing kids, to put it bluntly.

There was also a sequel to this japanese movie but it has not been rated very highly. Perhaps I will watch it someday.

Not bad, but for a change, I prefer the excellent Hunger Games.

6.5

Bedevilled

Really interesting korean film here which I finally got round to seeing.

The story gives us plenty to think about and at the end of the movie, it is left to the audience to decide which character was actually the guilty person.

Some shocking and disturbing scenes together with hints of humour; thats what korean cinema is all about and I am loving the journey so far!

7.5

The Raid

Was invited to an advance preview of this movie at the cinema.

It is not actually fully out until 18 May. Highly enjoyable action movie with excellent fight sequences. I think it is the first indonesian film I have ever seen!

Whilst the plot and twist were a little predictable, the fight scenes do make up for it. I think it will be huge success here in the UK. I am sure Hollywood would like to do a remake of it at some point!

8

Frontiers

Brutal french film which has a very interesting build-up and lots of character development before the thrilling sequences start.

It was a really good idea however, it took a little bit of patience at the beginning of the film to get into the story.

Once it started though, it was very gripping. One of my favourite french films probably on par with Haute Tension.

Cutting Moments

This one came up in my horror/gore film research.

Eventually having got hold of this short, 25 minute movie, I was left quite disappointed.

It is not as brutal as other shorts like the aftermath series.

I would not bother with one; just pass it off. You will not miss anything!

2

The Cabin In The Woods

Crazy Saw-like film with a difference.

Diehard horror fans might laugh at this and not think much of it, but the average film goer may enjoy as it presents a twist to the standard story by involving some sci-fi effects.

I must admit the monsters were very interesting; there are a wide range of creatures.

There is talk at present of a possible spin-off/sequel but it will be tough to pull-off and top this one.

Not bad...

I Saw The Devil

As explained in the previous post, I want to see more korean films so I found this.

This is the story of a serial killer and indeed was very well made. Haunting, graphic and extremely well made. The killer indeed is a psycho.

Story was a tad long, they cold have cut 20 minutes (it was 2 hours 20 minutes long!)

Still very good. It left its mark on me. The next korean on the list to watch is a movie called "Bedevilled." That looks very good too.

A high 8.5 for this. Must watch for horror fans!

A Tale Of Two Sisters

Korean horror movie going back a few years.

It was not that gory and distasteful, more like psychologically disturbing. Had similar themes to movies such as Shutter Island and Inception, except this was more thoughtful and easier to understand.

Amazing film-making. Cinematography is awesome too.

Looking forward to seeing more korean films!

8

Diary Of A Wimpy Kid - Rodrick Rules

The sequel to the very successful Diary Of A Wimpy Kid focuses on the relationship with his elder brother.

Again, watch this with kids. They agree with me that whilst this was funny, the first movie was much better!

Nevertheless, still very entertaining and if you saw the first one, then you ought to watch this too.

Reminds me of the old American TV series, "The Wonder Years."

7

Battleship

Latest Hollywood Blockbuster which is no more than a water based "Independence Day."

Special effects are good, but there are quite a few and one gets numb after seeing them over and over again.

Acting performances are extremely wooden and really nothing to write home about. Over-hypedfilm I think.

Go and watch this if you have nothing better to do with your time.

A Snake Of June

Black and white japanese production made in the early 1990s.

Its a movie about sexual discovery and has a very unusual story.

The filming is bold and i've never seen anything quite like it before. Cinematography is amazing.

It's quite short; just under 80 minutes. Appreciate it is not for everyone. Quite haunting in its own unique way.

7

Diary Of A Wimpy Kid

Never got round to watching this as was a bit unsure. Decided to take the plunge and watched it with my kids (aged 9 and 4). They both really enjoyed it and so did I.

It's a simple tale of 2 kids growing up and they are new to middle school. It's a formula that worked and you do get to know the characters really well. It is also quite funny!

I gather there is a sequel to this movie and we will most likely watch it next weekend. Looking forward to it very much!

7.5

Audition

Japanese thriller from 1999 directed by Takashe Miike.

Excellent story with a shocking twist that takes you completely by surprise. The less you know about the movie, the more enjoyable the plot!

The movie really plays with the mind and gives you something to think about after.

It's a slow pace initially, but things build up and it gets very intense and suffocating...

A must watch.

Wrath Of The Titans

More of the same; following on from Clash Of The Titans.

I was hoping this film would blow me away, but it didn't. Starting to expect less and less from so called Hollywood Blockbusters.

I was pleased that I saw this in 2D. 3D is merely a money-spinner and in my opinion would not provide any added benefit.

Wooden performances all round, marginally better than COTT, but not as good as Immortals which I thought was pretty decent.

5

Naboer

Norweigian horror film here which I hear is quite underrated.

I thought it was good, but I did not find it very gripping. I realised and predicted the twist quite early on, but nevertheless, a good psychological thriller.

It is a little confusing as it plays with the mind.

Again, very twisted, but predictable.

6

Cannibal Ferox

Cannibal film from the 1980's. Comes a close second to Cannibal Holocaust.

Some scenes in this movie were pure filth. Quite engaging and kept interest. There was a little bit of hope that the innocent lady would escape so there was something to look forward to.

I think this film also pictured real animal cruelty - I know Cannibal Holocaust did.

An interesting ride... 6.5

Calvaire

AKA The Ordeal is a belgian horror production which was recommended to me after taking an interest in french horror cinema.

I must say that I was a little disappointed with this. I felt the torture scenes were quite lacking and found myself waiting for something disgusting or sudden to happen.

Found it quite tedious and unsatisfying and I am not quite sure what the whole point was.

5

The Story Of Ricky

Continuing with the theme of gore, this kung fu flick came as a recommendation through my research.

I was a little disappointed; the scenes were very unrealistic and was laughable in many places. It was hard to take seriously.

Not bad but I did not enjoy it that much.

Hard Candy

Some Hollywood for a little break from the far-eastern productions.

This movie is from 2005 and once again, I did not see the twist coming. Superbly done. However, story a little far-fetched and slightly flawed.

While not gory or graphic, the movie is a psychological thriller and thus it is more mind games than anything.

Certainly one to check out; cannot understand why I missed watching this one at the cinema all those years ago!

Girl Hell

Psychotic sick Japanese short film here from the nineties. Bares resemblance to Mu Zan E and Visitor Q. There is also a new type of fetish which I have discovered. It is too disgusting to mention here!

Special effects were a little dated. Anyhow, twisted nevertheless.

Not for the faint hearted.

6

The Hunger Games

Whoa! I just been to see the best film of 2012!

This film had passion, guts, glory. Special effects and fight sequences were exceptional! A movie that has the ability to "move" its audience is very special. This did just that on many occasions throughout.

Jennifer Lawrence is my new best actress. She displayed the utmost elegance and professionalism. Really looking forward to this amazing trilogy.

Rock on! My first 10 in a long time!

The Vow

OK needed to watch a romcom after having my head filled up with gore and filth so this fit the bill nicely.

I'm not a huge fan of Channing Tatum but I do have a little soft spot for Rachel McAdams.

The story starts out as very cliche but a good story begins to develop. the middle of the movie is good, but unfortunately for me, the ending was a bit of a let down. Was expecting there to be a bit more magic. Instead, It was a bit of an anticlimax.

Nevertheless worth a watch if you're a fan of Rachel :-)

Mum and Dad

Disturbing british horror flick from 2008 which cost just £100,000 to make.

Very dark and bleak. Had a good build up although in my opinion the ending was a little bit of a let down. A few more twists would have made this a very good movie. A really twisted family to be part of.

Do check it out!

Ebola Syndrome

Another recommended CAT III shocker, but I would classify it as more of a comedy to be honest.

The movie made me laugh throughout. The villain, Kai was extremely funny. However, his willingness to do some dreadful things and lack of remorse was the most disturbing aspect for me in this film. The film was not that gory or disgusting as such. Just that his behaviour was far from normal.

It was alright, just wished it was more chilling!

5.5

Contraband

Mark Wahlberg back to doing what he does best...

The film story starts of very cliche good guy who used to be bad, being made to do bad things again due to certain circumstances. It feels as though it has been done before, but then the plot gets underway and it is quite convincing.

That said, right from the beginning, I could sense the twist and unfortunately for me, it was a bit of a let down. After watching the amount of movies that I do, intuition is a skill that I have picked up!

Wish Kate Bekinsale had more of a role in this movie.

Eat The Schoolgirl

I was quite intrigued by the title of this japanese film, but I was disappointed.

Got nothing to do with cannibalism! Its a very strange film. Effects were not that good. It was bearable as it was only an hour long.

Don't recommend it.

2

p.s. going to watch some hollywood for a change tonight!

Sunday, 18 March 2012

Tumbling Doll Of Flesh And Blood

Fake japanese snuff film, which is totally filthy.

Made me cringe and look away, even though I knew it was not real.

Yes, you could tell the parts that were cut off were plastic, but If you got it in your head that it was real, then it is very disturbing indeed.

The ending is totally crazy, you just feel numb afterwards!

6.5

Dumplings

Stylish chinese horror film, going back to 1994.

Still following the horror theme, this one is not that gory, but the idea is twisted nevertheless.

Acting is very good, and the cinematography is very vivid. There are some unpleasant moments.

These far-eastern films do not hold anything back!

7.5

Subconscious Cruelty

Another strange movie this one.

There were 4 segments to it. I watched it through a recommendation, but I was not really impressed by it.

My experience from watching these types of movies is that the ones from the far-east are a lot more terrifying and twisted!

Red Room 2

Japanese gore fest.

Interesting idea, but it was quite funny as effects were not that realistic.

For me, there was only one shocking moment, but compared to what I have seen, it was still relatively tame.

Not seen Red Room - the first in the series, but expect it to have been like this.

5

The Poughkeepsie Tapes

Horror film that I missed back in 2007, only just saw it.

Filmed in documentary style; I must say it was different and quite effective.

It was nice to be able to get a feel of the story from a different perspective; I think it added to the horror.

Not as gory and shocking, but disturbing nevertheless. They should film a sequel?

Kahaani

A break from the horror for tonight...

A Bollywood production here, but it is not your usual singing and dancing type, neither is it a love triangle, but an excellent thriller. Throughly believeable and filmed wonderfully.

A very captivating tale that grips you right from the beginning. Vidya Balan finally takes Bollywood by storm with back to back movies; The Dirty Picture was her previous offering.

If you are hesitiating about watching this, don't. Just go and see for yourself.

Bollywood is back!

9

Slaughtered Vomit Dolls

Another sick title marked off. Although this was not very appealing and infact I found extremely boring and nonsensical.

Its really not worth talking about this, so I will end here. A word of advice; stick to the Japanese made films; they are a lot more shocking that this American trash!

2

Haute Tension

High tension is this gory French production. Part of my search to find the sickest, most disturbing material I can lay my hands on. You have probably noticed from all the strange and bloody titles as of late.

An interest that started last summer, I have started to see and review some horror films.

This is an excellent movie, and will leave you gasping for oxygen.

There is an excellent twist, and took me totally by surprise. There is a further french thriller that I am waiting to watch; Frontiers from 2007. Will let you know about that one soon.

7.5

Mu Zan E

Mu Zan E is a compelling movie which is just over an hour long. It was in japanese without subtitles unfortunately, however the imagery is such, that they are not really needed.

Again some very extreme moments which are quite ugly and it just amazes me that some people can think of such twisted things.

I have seen a lot worse than this mind you, but this is quite terrifying nevertheless.

6.5

Saturday, 10 March 2012

Genesis

Hauntingly beautiful movie which is just 30 minutes long.

It's a spanish film but with no dialogue. It is extremely moving and I thought it was quite sad. Camera work is intricate. Very artistic and effective. Not as gory and numbing as Aftermath which is also by the same director, silent and half an hour long.

A must for all horror fans.

8

Visitor Q

Wierd japanese film made by acclaimed director Takashe Mike.

It is indeed a very strange film about a deranged family. Some of the scenes are quite a shock, but I did not feel that disturbed by them. It is fascinating watch however. Anyway, a stranger enters their lives and changesthem completely.

Interesting!

Baise-Moi

French thriller about 2 women who go on the rampage after being exploited.

Quite violent but not as graphic as some films recently reviewed.

Ending was a little bit of a let down really.

Provides a few shocks, but fairly mild and tame.

5

Nekromantik

Extremely bizaare and crazy German film from 1987.

It is indeed a very strange film.

The "bad deeds" are done without a care in the world and giving the audience the feeling that whatever is being played out on screen is entirely normal - very twisted.

Watch at your own peril - some scenes are hard to stomach.

5

Grotesque

Japanese slasher movie.

Watched the uncut version. Camera work was superb and it had me suffocated.

The twist 3/4 from the end was expected, but was very cruel and shocking.

A must for all horror fans.

7

This Means War

This has actually bombed at the box office. I thought it would do quite well as trailers seemed very promising and the movie was highly publicised.

I thought Reese Witherspoon looked amazing in it and I think thats why a lot of male folk went to see the movie to be honest.

The story line is very mediocre, but there are some funny moments.

It actually was not as bad as I thought it would be.

6

Monday, 5 March 2012

The Sitter

Crazy laughs with Jonah Hill.

The films works because of the child stars in it; they were very good and its the main reason why this film was not that bad.

I was expecting poor laughs, but it was quite funny in places. Had the children not have been in it, it would have been a very average movie.

The last film with Jonah Hill being fat. Or is it?

6

Guinea Pig 2 : Flower of Flesh and Blood

Short Japanese gore film from the 1980s which is a must for die-hard horror fans.

There is plenty of it, and is very cringe-worthy. Certainly made my stomach churn.

Was hoping it would end quickly and it was just 42 minutes long. Filmed documentary-style, this brings to the screen a lot of shock.

Not for the faint-hearted.

7

The Adventures Of TinTin

Spielberg animated film that came out towards the end of 2011. Finally saw it today and was quite surprised how good it was.

Animation was superb, looked life-like. The plot and story was good; my 9 year old good understand easily!

Characters were great and was good fun to watch. Looking forward to the next adventure!

7.5

Safe House

Big blockbuster pairing up Denzel Washington with Ryan Reynolds.

Story was a bit different, however was mediocre. Scenes were engaging and kept you interested. The ending became apparent right from the start and the "twist" was predictable.

Denzel Washington movies are big affairs and people pay to go and see him everytime a movie of his comes out.

It's good, but could have been much better.

7

Monday, 27 February 2012

The Woman In Black

Really really surprised with this film.

Was not sure whether to take Daniel Radcliffe seriously, but my oh my did he do well out of the Harry Potter role?

The movie itself was very eery and creepy. Made me jump in a few places and it was very dark. Even the kids toys were scary.

Bit surprised by the ending but it played to its favour.

7.5

In A Glass Cage

Seen some pretty wierd stuff, and now have this film to add to that list!

It's a spanish movie and is very unusual and twisted. It is not as graphic, but the imagery it portrays is quite disturbing. A bit different to what I am normally used to.

Looking forward to seeing more horror films in 2012!

6.5

Monday, 20 February 2012

Man On A Ledge

Huge huge plot holes in this movie, but it was entertainment and that is what most people pay to watch.

One for the masses really; I took the ride anyway. Not really that keen on Sam Worthington. The best thing in this movie was probably newcomer Latina, Genesis Rodriguez! Also, I noted Ed Harris looking particularly unwell. He seemed to be very frail - I hope he is alright.

Not one I will watch again.

6

A Monster In Paris

Trailers looked promising but found this to be a little lacking in the animation department.

The original movie is in french, but for the west, there is a dubbed english version which is out in the cinema.

Paris was captured beautifully and although the movie was very colorful, the story lacked the cutting edge. The story was very basic and did not tug at the heart. Well, not to mine anyway!

Extremely Loud Incredibly Close

This was a mediocre film which was made exceptional with the debut of Thomas Horn.

The young teenager was astonishing and has a bright future ahead of me. I am looking forward to seeing more of him in the years to come. He has a lot of potential!

Its a sad tale. There is nothing really at all that special in the plot. It is just that once again, one begins to care for the welfare of the boy and whether he actually gets to solve the puzzle which is his mission. Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock are awesome as supporting.

I rate it 6.5 for the film, but feel Thomas Horn deserves a 9 for his acting.

A Dangerous Method

Strange film this. I watched it not knowing anything about it.

It's a film I did not find gripping at all and for me it dragged and dragged. I thought Keira Knightley overdid the acting a little; but she was of course directed and probably asked to have behaved in that manner!

Subject matter was not very appealing in my opinion despite excellent performances from Viggo Mortensen and Michael Fassbender.

Not a movie I want to watch again.

5

The Muppets

A must watch for any fan of The Muppets.

I grew up watching this and is a wonderfully inspiring movie. It is not just for little kids as it has a much bigger message on the whole.

People have criticised it for not showing enough of their "favourite" characters. The movie makers would have loved to I am sure, but obviously there are time constraints and thus cannot allow the film to drag on!

Exciting and funny...look out for the "new" muppet!

8

The Artist

This is a movie you will either hate or really enjoy.

I liked it very much. very refreshing change indeed switching to silent mode.

Having also been familiar with the work of Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo (they were together in OSS 117 Cairo: Nest Of Spies) they were not at all strange to me. They are talented people and I expected no less from them.

The running time of just under 1 hour 40 minutes passed so effortlessly.

Fully deserving of all awards that it has been nominated for.

9

The Dirty Picture

Bollywood release here which I wanted to see when it was originally released. As it is now on DVD I got my hands on it so watched it as soon as I could!

Wasn't disappointed - Vidya Balan is sublime and superb as the ordinary girl who turns into the "vamp." Tells us of the struggles of being in the film industry and all the politics and pitfalls associated to it.

The feel of the movie was very real and it gave a raw insight and was therefore quite blunt. Not suited to people of more conservative taste.

It's a sad ending; I wished to see a happier one. Seems like Bollywood is changing...

8

Young Adult

Was good to see Charlize Theron back on the big screen after a fairly long time.

For those of you expecting a comedy, you will be disappointed. This is not really funny and is quite serious infact. Parts of funny, but do not expect to be rolling in laughter every 5 minutes.

The tale has been told a few times and could potentially have been quite cliche in places. However, the movie draws you into the characters and you do end up "caring" for them. This is a sign of good film-making.

7.5

Monday, 6 February 2012

Martha Marcy May Marlene

Strange movie this one...Elizabeth Olsen does really well and pulls off a very good performance indeed. I was not expecting her in tho kind of role!

Back to the story, It's about a girl who was part of a cult and who escaped and is helped by her sister.

The movie uses clever flashbacks to the time she was in the cult and its very nicely inter-related with the present time.

The ending is the best part of the movie. Gives one something to think about!

7.5

The Grey

Awesome film here which I was really looking forward to which did not disappoint.

Loved the ending which is sort of left open as well. I loved the story and metaphors and there is a lot to learn and take in from the movie.

All the supporting actors I had not seen before did a terrific job.

Right on the money...8.5

The Descendants

Yes, again its George Clooney doing what he does best. Makes that grin and pretends its acting.

I must admit to enjoying the script and was interested in the film right from the start.

The girl actors in it were also very good and spontaneous. I can't believe George has been nominated for it. I feel another actor could have done justice to the role.

Still a good drama nevertheless.

7.5

Sunday, 29 January 2012

Agneepath

Remake of Amitabh Bachchan 1990 cult classic with Hrithik Roshan in the lead.

He did well and is probably his best role to date.

Sanjay Dutt as Kancha is terrifying, but for me he best role was played by Rishi Kapoor as Rauf.

Sad and emotional...something not like your typical bollywood movie.

8

Haywire

Some good action sequences though I felt let down by performances by Michael Douglas and Anotonio Banderas.

A typical revenge plot but it was Gina Carano doing the fighting.

I expected a little more twists to a movie directed by Steven Sodenburgh!

6

Shame

Was really looking forward to this drama which was very good overall but for me, failed to provide the shock factor.

There are some nice metaphorical moments and the ending is particularly thought-provoking.
I thought Carey Mulligan's performance was excellent.

Need to be in the right mood to watch this.

7

War Horse

Beautifully crafted and endearing drama. Thoroughly enjoyable and heartwarming.

I wish it tugged a little more at the strings of my heart.

Its a shame the horse was nor credited. For me, it was the best character of all.

Nice of them to show the indians working alongside the british in The Great War.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Mixed reviews given by people on this movie.

I consider myself very patient when it comes to watching movies; I have sat through the most boring of films and not winced.

This however, was extremely slow indeed. It did not capture my interest and neither did I care for the characters involved. I felt the movie was not made for the general audience.

I will have to agree with people who found it boring, I guess I am in the same boat!

4

Carnage

Satirical comedy by Roman Polanski. The whole film is a real time meeting between 2 couples whose children had a skirmish with each other.

It is quite interesting how a small meeting gets blown out of proportion and is quite funny at times.

I though John C Reilly was good; I am a big fan of his! Quite remarkable that they managed to make a movie of 79 minutes long.

7

The Iron Lady

Brilliant and mesmerising performance by Meryl Streep who is one the best actresses of our time.

Its the sort of film that should appeal to everyone as it does not go too deep into political situations and thus will not "bore" the audience. It is more of a character study and I though the flashbacks worked quite effectively. If you are expecting a film full of political activity then you will be disappointed.

For me, then I wanted to see Thatcher's portrayal by Streep and she did a very fine job.

Great movie

8.5

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Was unsure at first whether or not to watch this having seen the swedish original. I hasten to add that I have not seen the remaining 2 films of the trilogy.

But to my surprise, this was a very good remake with the hollywood cut and I found it very effective. Rooney Mara was indeed very good and deserves an award for her performance.

Watching this has revived my interest so will hopefully watch the other 2 (swedish films) at some point.

Very good - 8
