Jack the Giant Slayer

From the trailers, this looked really incredible; the special effects seemed very good too so much so that even my kids were keen to watch it.

When we did eventually sit down to it, we found the story was being dragged out far too long; the running time was nearly 2 hours. I felt the movie could have been much more effective if it was 85 minutes long.

Overall, its generally alright if not predictable of course. Certainly an entertaining blockbuster that retained a lot of the feel and plot of the original fairy tale.

6.5

Man Of Steel

High expectations for this; one of the hugest releases in a long time. The trailer looker eloquent and classic.

When the serious actions starts though after half an hour, all coherent story telling stops. In the blink of an eye the movie goes from feeling like a sci-fi Batman Begins to Transformers 3 minus the nuanced story telling. Suddenly Superman is here and we get these big sweeping beautiful scenes. Unfortunately, they're just completely boring and out of place.

I kept waiting for it to recapture the tone of the first half, but the action just keeps getting bigger and dumber. In the middle of the unending action spectacle of the second half, I actually nodded off as it became too much.

6 - just about.

After Earth

After reading all the reviews, was seriously expecting the worst...

However, after getting over the first 20 minutes, the movie becomes interesting and is certainly quite watchable.

What was surprising and disappointing is that Jaden and Will do not appear in many scenes together and this is what people who watched this hated this the most.

Yes, I agree the acting was wooden but I think that was because of the character. Yes, Jaden is not the best, but i've seen much dire actors perform! Also, felt the effects could have been a lot better.

Don't read reviews, judge for yourself.

The Iceman

The true story of Richard Kuklinski, the notorious contract killer and family man. When finally arrested in 1986, neither his wife nor daughters have any clue about his real profession.

I had never heard of this Kuklinsky person and it was interesting to see his story. The multiplicity of his lifestyle had to be a killer (no pun intended) to live out. I don't know of many actors who could go from one to the other so effortlessly. From cold-hearted killer to nice person to ragging man to loving husband and father. Michael Shannon can do this well. And those subtle expressions of his! They're great. Icy. Kind. Murderous. He delivers an incredibly powerful performance; one that I shan't forget in along time!

Solid - 8

The Great Gatsby

i went into this not knowing what to expect; I knew nothing of the original 1925 novel and neither did I have a clue about the 1974 film. I was told that it was a movie you would either love or hate. For me, it was luckily the latter...

The direction in this film is impeccable. The cinematography is marvelous and really lets the viewer absorb the sheer artistry that has gone into making this film.

Performances are phenomenal by the entire cast. Carey Mulligan's Daisy is every bit as careless as one would expect, but she also manages to show some complexity in her role. Tobey Maguire is a great avatar for us to take on as we enter this film. He is very much the viewer as he sees everything happening, but is ultimately helpless to change anything. The true standout in the film is of course, Leonardo DiCaprio.

I won't say more; check it out for yourself, OLD SPORT!

Broken City

Smarter than you think, but not as clever as I had hoped was my immediate impresion after watching this.

Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe and Catherine Zeta-Jones; what could one want I asked, but this tale, whilst keeping my attention left me hungry for more. This could have been so much better!

By the end, this was one convuluted mess and the story just didn't flow and lacked direction. Glad I watched on DVD in my own time!

5.5

Hansel & Gretel : Witch Hunters

This movie is stupid and has fun with it!

Only reason I watched it was because of Gemma Arterton. I had a much different impression, I thought it would be dark and clever like Snow White and the Huntmans but it was infact the opposite! I could not have been more incorrect!

Effects were sloppy and script was poor. I have a high tolerance for bad movies and this has been the worst in a long time.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Much hyped Deepika and Ranbir starrer, mostly due to the fact they were once lovers. I guess, people wanted to see how they would act with each other on screen.

I must say the chemistry between the two was definately there and the film is shot in amazing locations and cinematography is superb.

The biggest letdown however was the actual plot. A tried and tested, see-it-all-before type love story unfolds. The film mainly contains a fair amount of gags as the main audience is for the masses. Music was great, my favourite song was Kabira that provided that "sufi" edge.

In its favour, it is a good time pass, but I doubt it will withstand the test of time...
