The Butler starts off as an intriguing personal biopic about a man many people have never heard of, but it soon finds itself lost among a steadily growing political agenda with nothing interesting going on as far as story is concerned.
The film sheds light on the main character, played by Forest Whittaker, his family issues and his involvement in the Civil Rights Act. The most important flaw of this film is that its main character is really not all that interesting. It's cool that he worked for so many presidents, in such an important time in USA history, but there's really not a lot to him other than that.

Saving Mr Banks
Saving Mr Banks tells the story of Walt Disney's battle to get the rights to make Mary Poppins into a movie. I wasn't expecting to like this but was completely blown away.
It is beautifully put together, is hilarious in parts and very touching and emotional at other stages, but is not overly sappy or cheesy.
There are some outstanding performances here. Emma Thompson plays Mrs Travers beautifully and Tom Hanks does a good job of playing Walt Disney.
However the stand-out performance is, surprisingly, delivered by Colin Farrell as Mrs Travers' father.

Oldboy
Old Boy is a stylistically challenging, highly innovative, but ultimately a hollow exercise.
The plot is at first close to incomprehensible as he stumbles from one situation to another. When the villain explains his schemes at the end and brings enlightenment, I just couldn't care anymore. The intriguing premise is destroyed by the revelation that it's all a contrived revenge plot by the bad guy.
And contrived it is. The story only works by inserting endless flashbacks (full of bad pathos) and explanations. To keep the audience interested, we get gruesome scenes of murder, self-mutilation and general mayhem. As others have remarked, these scenes are well done, but serve no greater purpose. It's all a so-what comic extravaganza.
I got a lot of disappointment having waited a long time to watch this. I have seen better.

The Host
It took itself too seriously to be a comedy, and yet was too light hearted to have any real message (though it did seem to be trying to make some kind of statement. Anti-pollution, anti-American or anti-government). The drama was misplaced and mixed in a confusing mish-mash with all the other styles.
Secondly, after the initial monster attack nothing happens for almost the entire film. This lack of action made my attention wander, and apparently it did the same for the director, as whole plot threads go unresolved.
I was really disappointed by this film. I'd been looking forward to a decent creature flick, and instead I get some pseudo-political, horror-comedy lite.

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty
I did really enjoy the film. It has a nice message and is definitely a feel good movie. There is nothing wrong with that. For me, this is the most beautifully looking film I've seen this year. The cinematography and camera shots were fantastic - right up there with Life of Pi and Gravity. It's definitely worth seeing on the big screen.
I personally enjoyed Ben Stiller in a more serious role. The film has comedic elements but everything is a bit more subtle and reflective of a man trying to find his inner courage and voice.

Anchorman 2
One of the funniest of the year, Will Ferrel is very good.
Just thought was a tad overlong and there was a little too much of character "Brick" which ruined it for me a little. It could have done with a 20 minute cut, there were some "dragging" scenes...
Stupidity at its finest!

The Flu (Gamgi)
Korean movie...The first half was a rather sweet portrayal of the world's worst mother, a well meaning rescue worker and an impossibly cute little girl.
In the second half "the flu" subplot kicks in and the stupidity rolls out, descending into a woefully laughable melange of cliche.
A tad overlong, but quite entertaining. But still prefer Jason Statham!

Frozen
Too many songs for my liking I'm afraid. The story and characters did not appeal to me; I thought this was tipped as the best animation of 2013, but it just did not do it for me and cannot understand why all people are raving about it.
Pace was too slow for a movie of this genre; when it did kick start it was the third act and too late for the characters to be explored. It didn't help that 90% of the movie was singing.

Homefront
"Transporter" rocketed Statham's name as a well rounded action star. Since then, most of his action films have felt the same, just with a different title. That was my mind set going into watch this film.
"Homefront", isn't your usual Statham film, and it's nice to see it play out the way it did. A change of pace for Statham movies, and hopefully a turning point for the actor. But let's keep things simple: Story: Good Acting: Good Action: Very Good Pacing: Good If you're looking for a good action film with a lot of heart, watch this. It's not bad.

The Family
Hadn't heard the best of reviews for this but the likes of Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert De Niro made me go.
Not giving too much away in respect of the storyline, I was pleasantly surprised by the wittiness and humour. Some of the action scenes were very good but the ending was not quite cliche. I wouldn't fall off my chair if they decided to make a sequel.

The Hunger Games : Catching Fire
Second in the series. I was expecting a lot of character, emotion and story in this which is what the audience got.
I did not find it as appealing as the first and the ending could have been a lot more better and left more of an impact.
Aside Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson the other side-characters are depicted very well, and the overall acting in this film is superb.
It is nearly 2.5 hours long and in order to understand the story, the 1st part is essential viewing.

Don Jon
"Don Jon" is the feature directorial debut of the talented and ridiculously charismatic Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He also wrote the script and plays the title character together with Scarlett Johansson, who really excels in her role too.
Also featuring the always wonderful Julianne Moore in an important role, plus Glenne Headly (I've missed her on the big screen), Tony Danza, and Brie Larson as Jon's parents and sister, respectively; "Don Jon" is worth the visit. Here's hoping for more JGL directorial efforts!

Gravity
Indeed the best space film ever done. This film transports you to space in every cinematic way possible. The visual effects are so brilliantly executed it makes you wonder if they shot part of it in space.
Incredibly effective long takes throughout the film bring the realism and suspense that none other space film has ever done before. The acting is subtle and engaging. Sandra Bullock deserves another Oscar after this as well as best director for Alfonso Cuaron and Cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki.
I can't recommend this film enough. Ground breaking, beautiful and technically perfect. Film schools will be studying this film in the future.

Thor : The Dark World
A much weaker film than the first, but not a bad attempt. Saw it in 2D.
A good attempt at a story, but felt rushed in parts. Lack of character development led to a little boredom.
Natalie Portman feels underused, but I liked Loki this time - he was a big flop for me in the Avengers Movie.
There is a scene after the credits, so stay that bit longer - there is definately a 3rd film on the horizon.

Captain Phillips
What a stunning film - the imminent threat of deadly violence tempered with the tragic circumstances that drive people to such desperate actions made for a very human story.
If Hanks is nominated for an Oscar for this, most likely he will for just that one scene at the end, then Barkhad Abdi deserves a nomination too, because their scenes together were electric - never once did Abdi appear the junior party, every bit Hank's equal as two cunning foes trying to outfox one another.

Filth
There is no other way that I could describe this film. It is filled with some of the most crazy and strange scenes that I have seen. Pretty much everything offensive that you could think of is in it. It made me laugh, cringe and frown at some of the ridiculous stuff that happened in it.
Deep in the storyline though, was an utterly captivating, yet tragic story. I came out of the theatre speechless, I had no idea what to make of it or think. Now I have thought about it, I can see how good it really was.
James McAvoy gave a perfect performance in the lead role. Everything about the character that he portrayed was realistic, and I could feel the emotion coming out of him throughout his descent into madness.
This film is not for the faint of heart or easily disturbed, but if you can deal with the weird and wacky, then you are going to love it.

A Good Day To Die Hard
Worst film in a series...ever.
No script, felt like a foreign movie with all the subtitles and the plot was tiny in comparison to the previous 4 movies.
Do yourself a favour and skip this.

Pain & Gain
The fact that this actually happened in real life just boggles the mind. Its way too ludicrous and insane and therein lies the pull.
Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson brings some charm and likability to most of his roles. He's the only standout and gives a terrific performance in this painfully dumb movie. Mark Wahlberg does his usual comedy thing and Mackie gets to do something other than be the token black guy.
Pain and Gain is overtly crude and has a few laughs here and there in its first half while the second half loses all its energy, but the thing is, its really not a good movie.

The Guilt Trip
These days, people want vulgarity in their comedies. This is apparent with how well Appatow films do in the box office.
I just don't understand why films like 'The Guilt Trip' get such negative responses from the audience and critics alike. Sure, this wasn't a cinematic masterpiece but neither was 'This Is 40' and that is getting a better response than 'The Guilt Trip' is.
Although I wasn't laughing out loud all the way through, the film made me think of my own relationship with my mother. I had a great time with 'The Guilt Trip' and would recommend it to anyone that is fed up with today's standards of comedy. Barbara Streisand is perfection.

Broken Flowers
It's very smart, well-made and entertaining, directed with sure-handed control, full of quirky, funny moments and superb acting. The film pretty much avoids clichés, although it does rely a bit on the familiar "Aren't Middle-Americans quirky?" idea for its humour.
The only weakness for me is rooted in the film's strength: I feel like there's not quite enough here and the ending was not satisfying.
Murray's character is beleaguered and despondent, Murray plays him with perfect subtlety But, the combination of his muted performance and the spare storytelling left me wanting more.

Parental Guidance
Billy Crystal and Bette Midler are on top form for this movie, with Marisa Tomei supporting who I am a big fan of.
If you have a family or live as part of an extended family then this film is likely to appeal as it touches on similar scenarios.
Some bits are emotional, and if you can relate to it, it can be effective and funny. I do not believe IMDB scores have been too fair. I would rate it a solid 7

The Bling RIng
Again, this is another movie I watched on the flight to Toronto.
A film inspired from true events, directed by the very talented Sofia Coppola so I thought it would be quite good.
Disappointed to report that it had no plot or story-line whatsoever. You could have easily sat on a keyboard and written the script, probably better. It makes me feel no sympathy or compassion for the main characters. It made me cringe just to continue looking. All this movie shows us are spoiled teenagers ruining their lives. I had to fast forward through most of it.

White House Down
Ok so the only reason I saw this was because I was on an aeroplane...
It lacked the sophistication of Olympus has Fallen which is a virtually identical movie. The only good movie about this was that Jamie Foxx was playing the role of President!
Movies in which action does most of the talking, need to have deep rooted and believable characters, and this starts from the writing stage till the final casting but unfortunately this is one of the weakest aspects of the movie.

The Heat
Just another run of the mill action comedy.
I did not find the funny overly funny, there a few lines in it that made me laugh a few times. Story was very mediocre.
It was nice to see Sandra Bullock but I felt she could have done so much better; the Proposal was a much better role for instance.
Melissa McCarthy seems to be in the type of role that has become entirely normal for her. I would now like to see her in a more serious role...

Prisoners
Prisoners is extremely suspenseful and equally disturbing. Canadian director Denis Villeneuve, whose last film was the equally spellbinding and disturbing Incendies, builds up the tension from the first frame and does not let up for the full 153 minutes of the movie.
Aaron Guzikowski's script, though on the surface a child kidnapping thriller, bucks all Hollywood trends and, as well as being a taut thriller, poses serious moral issues.
It also helps that the film has a first rate cast doing outstanding work: Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Terence Howard, Melissa Leo, Maria Bello and Viola Davis. Prisoners is not for the faint heated but is likely to feature strongly at next year's Oscars.

Rush
I am not a F1 fan, but I knew enough of the history of the main protagonists to appreciate the film. The main set pieces of the film set a year before I was born so mainly my knowledge was based on my Fathers recollection of the events.
The film is bang on in period, cars fashion and sets the tone excellently, the cinematography is nothing short of breathtaking and the effects are very much in keeping with the period, no ridiculous CGI.
The acting, on the whole is nothing short of miraculous, Hemsworth and Bruhl are fantastic, particularly Bruhl, who's accent, mannerisms and natural acting was impressive.
If you like History in F1, a well documented rivalry and a film that captures this, watch it.

The Lunchbox
Had heard a lot about this movie recently. Was browing Youtube and came across it so decided to give it a watch.
I found it very slow and cumbersome initially, but then the two main characters; Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Khan sucked me in although I found myself longing for just a touch more passion and energy from both of them.
The story does begin to wrap you around but there were a few scenes then made me wonder why they were in there at all as I felt they had no relevance. There were many loose ends that deserved explanation; the audience are not mind readers!
To end I felt the story was not entirely believable.
Not a bad try, pleased it is not being entered for the Oscars - there are better choices out there.

Insidious Chapter 2
This is a decent attempt at a sequel. Not quite as effective as we know what to expect at the end of the first film.
It was nice how some moments in the first film were explained in the second, I thought that was quite clever. Feel there were a few flaws and the scares were less in this movie. I only recall one moment where I actually jumped.
My only concern in this movie was the lack of urgency and tension.
Open ended for chapter 3 which I feel maybe a totally different story altogether...

About Time
This was a nice film.
The plot is thought provoking and the script is kept light, with several laugh-out-loud moments which can be all-too rare in this genre.
Domhnall Gleeson gives an extremely high quality performance in his lead role and is supported well by the highly experienced rom-com lead Rachel McAdams and an ever-amusing Bill Nighy, who provides much of the comic relief in the film.
It had everything and I am certain it will do well at Awards Ceremonies.

Sinister
I went to watch Sinister with high expectations and to be left a shivering mess. I thought it would be one of those films where I was squeezing the arms of my seat, squinting, trying to keep my head pointed at the screen.
As it turned out I ended up laughing at most of the "fright moments". The scares were predictable, the plot after 20 minutes was obvious. The film takes every scary, supernatural, horror cliché and crams them into just under 2 hours.
The acting isn't bad, but it's not brilliant either. The film relies too heavily on the names of the cast and the marketing strategy of "From the makers of Insidious and Paranormal Activity" than any real plot substance. There is nothing new in this film, if you have saw more than a couple of horrors over the last few years – then you will find it hard to leave fulfilled.

We're The Millers
An interesting concept, but far too predictable and not as funny as I thought it would be. Jokes were flat and it was just not to my taste. I did find Emma Roberts the best character and she has got huge potential going forwards.
I did find that it was far too long and some scenes were unnecessary. How this is a 7 on IMDB is beyond me.
A 5.5 at best.

Insidious
How people are claiming this is the scariest film in decades is beyond me.
I was rather surprised for the first 20-30 minutes, and thought it was going to be interesting. Yes, the story had been recycled but it still could have been a good concept if done right.
Then the cheese and my giggles came pouring out. I was sitting there thinking WTH??? This can't be serious. 'Heavy face paint' is meant to scare me? I've seen better at Haloween!!! And as for the ghosts..... well, they made me cry...... with laughter!!!
Whats worse is that part 2 is just round the corner!

Mann
I cannot believe it took me 14 years to watch this! Aamir Khan outdid himself in every scene. Manisha Koirala was very beautiful and her pain is evident throughout the movie. Definitely the best movie she has acted in. Sharmila Tagore as Dev's grandmother was heart wrenching. Anil Kapoor as usual was good. Above all the Director and his treatment of the movie was mesmerizing. The songs are melodious and meaningful.

You're Next
Fairly predictable but a well-executed spin on the terror in the woods theme, and does not rely on millions of dollars worth of supernatural CGI effects.
Easy to follow, chilling and entertaining, with a lead character you can care about it was an interesting way to spend ab hour and a half. A most original plot twist for last, and though many viewers may see it coming from a mile away, just HOW and WHEN it will be executed is the rewarding kicker.

Dead Man Down
This film is a mix of great and horrid bits. Colin Farrell's quiet yet intense act is matched by Naomi Rapace's overacting, the rather complex plot is messed up by cliché scenes and in the end, the moral seems to be that all plans that you care about are a lot easier to accomplish if there are no friends and romantic interests.
The thing with the film is that it has a lot going for it: great cast, good acting most of the time, a compelling story but somewhere along the way it turns sour and a tad overlong.

Elysium
What seems to be a trend in big budget SF films occurred, once again, in Elysium. I'm continually impressed with what is being created (visual effects wise) today, but remain disappointed when it comes to the associated screenplays/plot lines. At the end of this film, I had the same, perpetual feeling that no one out there making SF films gets the message: without a good story, you don't have a really good film.
The plot was lazy and lacked motivation. However, not a bad way to spend 2 hours.

Kick Ass 2
Kick-Ass 2 was definitely a film for the fans, if you aren't familiar with the Kick-Ass series then this movie wouldn't be for you. The fight scenes were crazy and "Hit-Girl" always runs the show and was the most entertaining for me.
One thing about sequel's is that they couldn't exactly retain the same shock factor the first one had because Hit-Girl was only 11 or 12 years old in it. But all things aside this was a pretty entertaining film and I think most people would really enjoy it. I would like to see a Hit Girl spin-off? Let's see.

But all things aside this was a pretty entertaining film and I think most people would really enjoy it. I would like to see a Hit Girl spin-off? Let's see.

The Promised Land
Here's a good little movie. Interesting story, extremely well written, directed and acted. Helicopter shots add to the beautiful location cinematography. Great use of music, some original.
Matt Damon is excellent. Francis McDormand is restrained and under used.
It's a small film dealing with a big issue. Perhaps half way through you might predict the ending but there's a "didn't see that one coming" twist.

The Call
This is a thriller with a breathtaking first half that makes the movie worth watching. Unfortunately the writer could not resist typical Hollywood clichés and thus destroyed the believable story that could have made this a great movie.
The last 20 minutes totally ruined it which is a shame unless of course we get a sequel? Perhaps...

The Big Wedding
It's another one in the long and sadly ever-growing line of Hollywood fiascoes, built on the premise that it's enough to throw together a bunch of star actors to get a blockbuster. It's not. The feeling you get is that the film's budget was spent on securing the big hitters, and then a couple of hundred bucks that were left were given to some sex-obsessed teenager in high school, to write the plot.
As a result, this movie which claims to be a comedy, is a farce, a farce of what a comedy should be. It was super boring, predictable and entirely unimpressive. Don't waste your time watching this grotesque concoction of nothing.

Monsters University
Took my children to watch this today and I was surprised to learn this was a prequel as opposed to a sequel.
I liked the way they showed the chemistry developing between Mike and Sully. You can actually feel it, and even though its animation, it feels real. This one isn't as sad, like how Inc was though. Whilst I still prefer Inc, this was not a bad effort by the director and my children generally enjoyed it.
One of the best animations this year.

Evil Dead
Terrible, terrible terrible.
Not scary, no intensity and no atmosphere.
Weak plot and acting and nothing like the original which was a landmark in this genre.

2 Guns
Had a chance to view it this week with only the trailer as a guide as to what I was about to see. It turned out to be mildly better than I was anticipating. Mark Wahlberg brought a comical element that worked with the overall story with Denzel basically being the straight man throughout. Denzel plays his role smoothly with a slight sarcastic comedic side; he is the main reason to watch this film.
I thought the movie was decent but it's no masterpiece, was bland at times and felt it was a waste of such a star cast.

Race 2
A sheer disappointment. Except for beautiful cinematography, nothing else works.
Clichéd screenplay, lack of surprising twist and turns, addition of unwanted characters, slow-pacing and unwanted songs.
The first half of the movie was a bit interesting, but the second half turns out to be more painful, thanks to the hackneyed writing which is half-baked.
John Abraham's performance is nasty and evil. Saif Ali Khan is average. Deepika Padukone looks gorgeous and acts well. Jacqueline Fernandez looks appealing but acts appalling!

Chennai Express
I watched without prejudice and by half way point, I hated this. The only good thing about this was Deepika Padukone who excelled in the role.
Khan imitates Jim Carrey in the first half, while he goes onto following his muscle memory of his yesteryear films; he overreacted way too much! i must have laughed 3 times in total.
The message at the end is truly unconventional but depicting it after such a long meaningless charade is a dumb idea.

Red 2
Was not overly excited about this release; thought the first one was fairly mediocre.
I liked this movie though - John Malkovich was very good but the stound out for me was Sir Anthony Hopkins. There was a good twist, but I thought it was 20 minutes slightly long and it caused my interest to wane a little.
Would I watch again? Probably not; but it was a good 2 hours to spend I suppose.

Hummingbird
A welcome change of pace for Jason Statham.
The story is dark, gritty and down to earth as many war vets suffer psychological problems and as a result end up homeless or drug addicts. The movie is very character driven, layered which adds some needed depth to a Statham movie. It feels authentic, the way its shot on the dark London streets. It's good to see Statham do a dramatic role plus use his action strengths at the same time.
Overall, If you're expecting an all out action film maybe you should watch something else. I'd give it a watch and see how you like it.

Only God Forgives
Very poetic and some people probably just did not understand this movie. That said, it was very slow and dragged out which is why many people could not bear it and walked out - there is very little dialogue.
Aside from Scott Thomas' acting, the only other redeeming quality of this film is the excellent way in which most scenes are set up and shot. The sets, the camera movement, the placement of the actors, all of these make up for some truly gorgeous shots.
Overall, sad as I am to say it, I cannot recommend seeing Only God Forgives.

The Wolverine
The trailers certainly looked very impressive. I thought the X Men Origins Wolverine would be a hard film to beat and I was right.
The basis of the film was quite weak; using the Japanese people and their "honour" as a story was very cliched. Action scenes were few and far between; made no sense to watch this in 3D; I didn't fortunately.
Built onto this is a predictable and lazy script with a few cheap jokes and a forced romance, and you have a movie that does little more than half-entertain you.

Frozen Ground
This is a relatively straightforward police procedural suspense thriller based on true events, with Nicolas Cage (cop) and John Cusack (killer) both cast in the roles one would normally expect to have been filled by the other. Cage is OK, Cusack is rather good. Vanessa Hudgens as teenage hooker Cindy is better than both of them: the girl can act.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
I would certainly be disappointed if this movie doesn't get nominated for the best foreign language film in the academy awards. Farhan Akhtar is like the epitome of dedication towards Milkha Singh's character. He was running like a pro. Cinematography was just amazing. Many shots were just breathtaking. Direction was just perfect and the casting was sensibly done. Parallel storytelling kept the movie balanced between Milkha Singh's life and his sports career.
But one of all, Farhan Akhtar rocked. He has always given his best in every field he has ever stepped in to. Respect for Farhan Akhtar, respect for Milkha Singh, the true hero.

This Is The End
This movie simply wasn't funny. It dragged on interminably, scenes with little comedic value got dragged out for far too long presumably because the directors (and main featured actors) were too high while making this steaming pile of wasted time.
This movie is a nauseating bromantic drama pretending to be a comedy and the less I say about it, the better!

Now You See Me
Yet another movie to do with magic; the last memorable ones being The Illusionist and The Prestige which were both very good movies; this had a lot to live upto.
The first half was certainly very intriguing and entertaining and kept my attention. After that though, the story started to lag and got stuck and then lost, and then ended with a very weak finale - that was most disappointing. The final twist made no sense and was way out of character.
Agree it was nice to see such a star cast but was disappointed at the lack of character development.

The Internship
With the premise of an internship at Google; you get the whole deal with product placements. Luckily "The Internship" manages to stay afloat as a two hour enjoyable and rather funny Google advert.
With previous individual failures Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson come together once more to share their amazing chemistry on screen. Vince Vaughen plays the exact same role he has played in every possible film you've seen of him lately. Since he's co-written the film; I guess he likes to feel right at home. The same may apply to Owen Wilson who's landed himself in a similar rut. It does make the whole process rather familiar but there is no denying that the chemistry both these lead actors share gives the films premise a new pair of legs every time it starts lagging a little. Both these actors clearly know their limitations and have managed to work around it well this time.
This is a good movie; brilliant chemistry between the leads along with wonderful supporting actors makes you forget the flaws and plot holes blatantly staring at you. You just go along with that warm fuzzy feeling with a smile plastered on your face.

The East
The East is the kind of movie that makes you want to join the fight, raise your voice and be heard.
The good. Extremely immersive. A incredible story with lots of emotions, conflicts, opposing moralities, and a stupefying journey. It is gripping and you will not be left unmoved.
The actors. Brit Marling and Ellen Page both give us a great performance. Brit was particulary amazing and displayed a vulnerability which would make any audience fall for her - she is will huge one day.
The bad. The ending is rushed. It feels like there was missing material at the end of filming and they couldn't go back to get what they needed and had to edit it with what they had.

World War Z
I went into this movie not knowing anything. I am glad I didn't - not really a fan of zombie films, but this came from a very different perspective and appeared a lot more realistic as it markets itself on intensity, rather than splatter and gore, which I actually preferred as it was a lot more subtle.
It is a movie that maintains the audience's attention by stringing you along on the edge with tension and suspense from beginning to end. It does a pretty good job of maintaining this grip even without the standard horror elements of slasher flicks.
I am aware of some very over critical reviews as it is based on a novel, but not knowing anything about it, I was pleasantly surprised and it exceeded expectation.

Jack the Giant Slayer
From the trailers, this looked really incredible; the special effects seemed very good too so much so that even my kids were keen to watch it.
When we did eventually sit down to it, we found the story was being dragged out far too long; the running time was nearly 2 hours. I felt the movie could have been much more effective if it was 85 minutes long.
Overall, its generally alright if not predictable of course. Certainly an entertaining blockbuster that retained a lot of the feel and plot of the original fairy tale.

Man Of Steel
High expectations for this; one of the hugest releases in a long time. The trailer looker eloquent and classic.
When the serious actions starts though after half an hour, all coherent story telling stops. In the blink of an eye the movie goes from feeling like a sci-fi Batman Begins to Transformers 3 minus the nuanced story telling. Suddenly Superman is here and we get these big sweeping beautiful scenes. Unfortunately, they're just completely boring and out of place.
I kept waiting for it to recapture the tone of the first half, but the action just keeps getting bigger and dumber. In the middle of the unending action spectacle of the second half, I actually nodded off as it became too much.
6 - just about.

After Earth
After reading all the reviews, was seriously expecting the worst...
However, after getting over the first 20 minutes, the movie becomes interesting and is certainly quite watchable.
What was surprising and disappointing is that Jaden and Will do not appear in many scenes together and this is what people who watched this hated this the most.
Yes, I agree the acting was wooden but I think that was because of the character. Yes, Jaden is not the best, but i've seen much dire actors perform! Also, felt the effects could have been a lot better.
Don't read reviews, judge for yourself.

The Iceman
The true story of Richard Kuklinski, the notorious contract killer and family man. When finally arrested in 1986, neither his wife nor daughters have any clue about his real profession.
I had never heard of this Kuklinsky person and it was interesting to see his story. The multiplicity of his lifestyle had to be a killer (no pun intended) to live out. I don't know of many actors who could go from one to the other so effortlessly. From cold-hearted killer to nice person to ragging man to loving husband and father. Michael Shannon can do this well. And those subtle expressions of his! They're great. Icy. Kind. Murderous. He delivers an incredibly powerful performance; one that I shan't forget in along time!

The Great Gatsby
i went into this not knowing what to expect; I knew nothing of the original 1925 novel and neither did I have a clue about the 1974 film. I was told that it was a movie you would either love or hate. For me, it was luckily the latter...
The direction in this film is impeccable. The cinematography is marvelous and really lets the viewer absorb the sheer artistry that has gone into making this film.
Performances are phenomenal by the entire cast. Carey Mulligan's Daisy is every bit as careless as one would expect, but she also manages to show some complexity in her role. Tobey Maguire is a great avatar for us to take on as we enter this film. He is very much the viewer as he sees everything happening, but is ultimately helpless to change anything. The true standout in the film is of course, Leonardo DiCaprio.
I won't say more; check it out for yourself, OLD SPORT!

Broken City
Smarter than you think, but not as clever as I had hoped was my immediate impresion after watching this.
Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe and Catherine Zeta-Jones; what could one want I asked, but this tale, whilst keeping my attention left me hungry for more. This could have been so much better!
By the end, this was one convuluted mess and the story just didn't flow and lacked direction. Glad I watched on DVD in my own time!

Hansel & Gretel : Witch Hunters
This movie is stupid and has fun with it!
Only reason I watched it was because of Gemma Arterton. I had a much different impression, I thought it would be dark and clever like Snow White and the Huntmans but it was infact the opposite! I could not have been more incorrect!
Effects were sloppy and script was poor. I have a high tolerance for bad movies and this has been the worst in a long time.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
Much hyped Deepika and Ranbir starrer, mostly due to the fact they were once lovers. I guess, people wanted to see how they would act with each other on screen.
I must say the chemistry between the two was definately there and the film is shot in amazing locations and cinematography is superb.
The biggest letdown however was the actual plot. A tried and tested, see-it-all-before type love story unfolds. The film mainly contains a fair amount of gags as the main audience is for the masses. Music was great, my favourite song was Kabira that provided that "sufi" edge.
In its favour, it is a good time pass, but I doubt it will withstand the test of time...

Bullet to the Head
Missed the cinema release just caught up with it on DVD.
Am a big Stallone fan but this did not quite rock my boat. Weak plot and it was not that much fun to watch either.
The pace was steady as the film went from killing after killing. It reminded me of Another 48 hours!
Nothing new here and i'm glad I didn't waste a theatre trip!

Fast and Furious 6
Saw the extended trailer for this and it did not excite me one bit.
However, lots of people have enjoyed the film so decided to give it a go. Yes, it's full of cliches but the actual action content was worthy of note and the plot was believable and interesting as well.
Once more, the ending is left as such that a 7th movie is on the cards and if it was anything as good as this, I'm sure there will not be any complaints.

Hangover III
Poor poor effort by everyone involved in this. I was sorely disappointed by the lack of jokes and weak plot especially after the tremendous initial film of the trilogy.
It just felt as though none of the actors wanted to be there. The theatre was very quiet at each gag meaning it was just not funny.
A huge letdown.

Mud
Had high hope for this movie which started out very well. It soon became clear that the young lad, Tye Sheridan was the real star of this as opposed to Matthew McConaughey or Reese Witherspoon.
As the film dragged out, my interest started to wane and I became more disinterested in the plot. I was expecting a much major twist to the end and it was just a melodram for me in the end.
It's a bit of an indie movie, and not for everybody. I felt it was a tad overlong.
Fine acting by Matthew McConaughey though.

Star Trek Into Darkness
Enjoyable follow up with the new set of characters bought in for this second installment from the 2009 follow-up.
The mood is fast paced and you don't have to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy this.
Acting is good, but I am sure lovers of the old series will be quick to moan about it. It did not feel overlong at all at over 2 hours long. Some of the acting by the lesser known actors was a little wooden.
Whilst this was good, the first was better. Lets see what the third has to offer!

Iron Man 3
It's a disappointing start to the month of May.
I was expecting this to be decent at least, but infact it was unbelieveably boring with a weak story and plot.
The actual IRONMAN superhero gets very little screen time; the movie should have instead been called TONY STARK.
I watched this in 2D - it was not made for 3D and I heard it was quite pointless. It is just a moneyspinner!
A good thing I feel is that the actual Ironman story has come to the end, there is no chance of a 4th...or is there?

Terrible terrible movie which is just not funny AT all.

Olympus Has Fallen
The best thing about this movie is its pace. You won't know how fast the 110 minutes go. There's not a minute you feel bored. The attack sequences are bit over the top, but if you are a drama lover, you won't be disappointed. The storyline isn't much to think about but the screenplay is apt. Its a good thing that the director Antonie Fuqua keeps things simple, doesn't dig too much into the conspiracy stuff and also doesn't include any unnecessary twists.
Gerard Butler does what he does best, fight bad guys. Aaron Eckhart as the stern faced president reminds you of Harvey Dent. Morgan Freeman probably is there to strengthen the star value in the film. But its the villain Rick Yune with his evil smile who impresses.
This is an out and out entertainer, don't think too much, just be in the moment and watch this movie.

Place Beyond The Pines
Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond The Pines is a visual odyssey, if nothing else. It is also an intense character study of three people. And it's a good film.
Not wishing to ruin the plot, I won't say anymore. When I first heard the plot, I was immediately struck by the similarities to another excellent Ryan Gosling movie, Drive.
In that film, Gosling plays a stunt driver, who takes on a job to help his neighbour. However similar the plot may be, the two films are complete opposites. The Place Beyond The Pines is a character driven study of morality and legacy, while Drive is closer to the genre of an action film. However, the two films do have one more thing in common, they both showcase excellent Ryan Gosling performances.
Despite the overlong ending, the film itself was still a great experience. A quiet moving character drama, expansive in it's scope yet intensely personal at its core.

GI Joe : Retalliation
Saw this in 3D as hardly any 2D shows were available.
Wearing the glasses was indeed justified - the action was good. I made sure I left my brain at home as I knew the plot would not be challenging.
Again, felt the movie was a little too long - there are a few useless sequences that were not necessary. Also a little misleading with the cast; top-billed actors like Channing Tatum and Bruce Willis were barely in this movie.
Once again, part 2 has been left wide open for a sequel, so be prepared for another installment!

Oblivion
Impressive CGI, action and an interesting story were the key ingriedients to this. I have to say that half-way through the film, I realised I had seen something similar before, in a film called Moon which was a lot more gripping!
I felt the movie was a little too long and that the some of the characters were undeveloped but those could be overlooked with the presence of the stunning visuals and impressive cinematography.
Tom Cruise seems to have starting doing more than one movie every few years - perhaps he is short of money. Not bad.

Robot and Frank
A simple plot with a nice and easy-going story. It's hard to fault this film; Frank Langella is brilliant. He and the Robot are the main characters.
The twist 15 minutes before the end is very special indeed; did not see that coming! It's funny and sad in equal measure. Within it, there's a clever subtext running through the movie, commenting on the loss of personality in the digital age, and the disposable nature of modern life. The more we come to rely on technology for everything, from our reading material to our aged care, the less we ourselves are practically capable of, giving rise to a generation of privileged, ironic, but purposeless people. What Robot and Frank highlights is not just the fragility, but also the value of a mind filled with life experience and skills. There's no substitute for the complex intelligence of our brains, and even the most sophisticated technology has more to learn from us.

Beasts of the Southern Wild
This may be the worst movie I have ever seen. I suppose someone thinks the Louisiana water people are worth a story for diversity's sake, but why? They are an ignorant, revolting bunch who subject their offspring to a life of poverty and abuse. The story is boring from beginning to end and the pretentious camera work just makes it worse. Yes, the acting is quite convincing. So what? It just did not serve any purpose whatsoever!

Trance
Danny Boyle's eagerly anticipated film was slick, but my immediate impression was that it was not amongst his best.
Cast is very good, James McAvoy, the talented Vincent Cassel and the wonderful Rosaria Dawson, who you will not have seen in a role like this before. Acting performances are strong.
Gripping thriller, which is full of twists and turns with the actual story being revealed in the last few shots of the film. The last frame is particularly clever.
Enjoyable.

Identity Thief
The reviews do not do this funny film any justice.
I was expecting it to be really dire, but was quite surprised. Yes, the film could have been edited for time, but it was full of capers. Jason Bateman is a very loveable person/character and I quite like his work. He pairs up with Melissa McCarthy who is brilliant.
There is a little sub-plot which drags the story, and brings the film down a little; it was unnecessary in my opinion.
For a comedy, this is quite good.

Welcome To The Punch
Strong Action - Weak Story
Very slick sequences, but unfortunately there were too many plot holes, also the story was quite unbelievable in places.
The cast was very good; the best Britain has to offer, but as stated above, the screenplay was very cliche.
What could have been a very good film, was a tad disappointing unfortunately.

Side Effects
Gripping psychological thriller with Jude Law and Rooney Mara.
Not seen either on the big screen for a while. Was interested in Steven Soderbergh's potentially last film to see what he could come up with.
The story goes from scene to scene and unfolds into an interesting story with excellent character development with an amazing twist and climax.
Personally, I did not see the twist coming and took me totally by surprise - I love it when that happens.
I enjoyed this compelling drama. Rooney Mara has a bright future!

Parker
Jason Statham doing what he does best. But this time, the movie is nearly 2 hours long. Does he pull it off? Yes and No.
Its interesting to see a sub-plot develop in a movie like this,. i.e the involvement of J-Lo half way through. She played the role to perfection and still looks the part even though she is in her mid 40s.
Only downside was that the movie was dragged out a little too long, and predictability was starting to set in.
Its average.

Kai Po Che
Indian movie tackling various social issues in one film. The leads are played by unknowns with the roles being played to utmost perfection.
This was not your standard Bollywood film; lack of song and dance, and was just 2 hours long.
I think the movie deserved half an hour more for character development; it then would have been perfect. The story has a "Shakespearean" climax to it which was totally unexpected. A similar movie with such an edge was Omkara.
Enjoyed this.

Arbitrage
Been a while not seen Richard Gere around so nice to see him up on the silver hair, sorry, silver screen again.
He excels in this role and is very convincing. Overall the movie is above average. Like all movies, there were plot holes and it could have been a much more gripping.
I know many disliked the ending as it leaves you to your own imagination as to what the ending should be. Generally, I don't mind an ending like this where it serves a purpose, but I felt this movie deserved closure.

Wreck it Ralph
Having seen the trailers and rave reviews, decided to watch this with my kids.
This is a movie that appeals to both boys and girls and those of all ages! I found it funny and witty.
It was not too long and managed to be effective with a decent story. The characters were very interesting.
Probably will be the best animation this year.

Wanderlust
The last few movies have all been comedies; so I thought I would carry on with the theme.
This has been out a year but I never got to catch it at the cinema. Very easy going, and like I Give It A Year, a fairly mediocre script.
Again it was funny in places, but it failed to make me laugh out loud and it was not very subtle either. The one saving grace was Jennifer Aniston who does well in these type of roles. Other than her, there was no reason to watch this rubbish!

I Give It A Year
Been a while since I saw a British Film. Trailer for this looked good so decided to give it a watch. Another big reason to watch this is the wonderful Rose Byrne who I really like, so a bonus really!
I was quite disappointed with the humour. I just did not find most of it funny. I think it tried too hard and it was not me being moody; the rest of the audience did not find it that funny either. It failed to make me laugh out loud except for one occasion.
The storyline was also quite mediocre offering nothing new in return. It could have been so much better.

Samsara
Filmed over nearly five years in twenty-five countries on five continents, and shot on seventy-millimetre film, Samsara transports us to the varied worlds of sacred grounds, disaster zones, industrial complexes, and natural wonders.
It is a follow up and very similar to Baraka (1992) also by the same director and has the same impact. However with better technology, this is easily one of the most visually-stunning films in the history of cinema. With regards to the scenes, I found the ones in Baraka more "awe-inspiring" and thus, a better film.
Everyone should watch this.

Hitchcock
I had high hopes about this film; thought it was a biopic of the great Alfred Hitchcock, but I was so wrong!
All the ingredients were there: great material (Hitch and the making of Psycho), great cast, good score, a big Hollywood budget, and the story they came up with was worthless. It was a huge waste of talent and the story did not really grip me at all. The title being extremely misleading. The content was extremely dull and lifeless; only Scarlet Johanssen provided the glimmer of sunshine.
Give it a miss...

This Is 40
It seemed from trailers that this was going to be very cliche, but infact, it was very funny and enjoyable. I give credit to a movie that can make you laugh out loud and this was one of them.
I was afraid all the good bits were in the trailer, but that was not the case. There is again a very interesting sub-plot that evolves and keeps the audience attentive. Leslie Mann stars with her real daughters; felt so natural and the movie boasts a star cast.
Worthy of a second watch. Very good.

Flight
I just love Denzel Washington - he is a pilot of a commercial airline and his professionalism comes under scrutiny following an incident.
Again, I felt the story was dragged on a little, but there was an interesting sub-plot; Mr Washington plays the role to perfection. There are comical moments too, notably those with John Goodman in them, which are hilarious!
It's another success for Denzel who is one of the most successful black actor's of our time.

Zero Dark Thirty
This movie charts the lead-up to the capture of Osama Bin Laden.
It's the first role of Jessica Chastain that I have seen in which she carries the whole of the movie. She does very well and her character is very real and displays good emotions.
There are a few plotholes and I thought it was dragged out a little too long. Even though we knew what would happen in the end, the film was not as nail-biting as Argo.
It was not amazing, but well worth a watch, for Chastain's role at least.

House At The End Of The Street
Yes, I watched it - don't laugh. Only reason was because of Jennifer Lawrence who I really admire.
I loved her in The Hunger Games and Silver Linings. I was looking forward to seeing her in a horror film.
This could have been a decent film, instead, it was let down by quite a few potholes. I have seen "bad" horror films in the past, this was not one of them.
Adequate and watchable.

Django Unchained
Tarantino's finest piece of work yet.
I went into this not knowing anything about it and boy was I surprised!
Dialogue was engaging and character development was excellent. Christoph Waltz and Samuel Jackson were just outstanding. Excellent support from Leonardo De Caprio and Kerry Washington.
A finely intricate plot which had me gagging for more. Could easily watch this again and again.
One of the best this year.

The Sessions
Strange wierd indie movie! Don't think I have seen anything quite like it!
William H Macy was brilliant in this dark comedy and you will be surprised to see Helen Hunt in such a role! It's a shame she has had so many surgeries to her face it looks wierd and so hard to take her character seriously!
Comical moments don't make you laugh out loud, they will make you wince if anything!
Definately worth a watch.

Gangster Squad
Highly anticipated movie with an all star cast.
It was very entertaining and got off to a high-octane start. In fact, there was never a dull moment in the whole film.
Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling were stellar. Sean Penn tried to be De Niro and Al Pacino and it did not really work out and seemed quite comical!
The script was a rollercoaster of emotions and at times, it was hard to take seriously.
If you are looking for a time pass, this one was very good at that!

Les Miserables
Ground-breaking musical transformed into something suitable for the big screen. Thought Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe were excellent. Wished to see more of Anne Hathaway though.
It was not your average movie and was very different to watching a conventional movie as 99.5% of the dialogue was in poetry and sung live by the actors.
Indeed it was very emotional at times. For me, the ending in particular. My only criticism was that it dragged out a little too long. Would have been perfect minus half an hour.
A solid movie, but I am not convinced it deserved to get 12 Oscar Nominations - we shall just have to wait and see.

Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola
The trailer to this looked very good and I had been seeing it regularly for the last few months. I thought the music was very catchy and was looking forward to some good acting performances.
Anushka Sharma was pleasing to watch and followed on from where she left off in Jab Tak Hai Jaan. I felt Imran Khan was a little wasted and lacked depth in his role. The show stealer was Pankaj Kapoor, who plays Mandola.
It's an interesting plot with some funny capers and some serious moments too.
Not a film I would watch again but not as bad as some people are making it out to be!

The Impossible
A very impressive disaster movie which is a true story about a family's survival during the 2004 Tsunami in the Indian Ocean.
The disaster killed over 200,000 people. The movie does well in showing the helplessness of those involved.
Amazing role played by Naomi Watts, but the stars of the show were the 3 young boys who held the whole movie together with their brilliant performances.
It's very disturbing and bound to cause disturbance so bear that in mind. You will hug your family tight after watching this.

Jack Reacher
Never heard of the books, so went into this quite blindly.
I am told the character does not really fit Tom Cruise; I did feel at times though that he was miscast.
This is a pretty solid movie. You get the idea quite early on that all is not what it seems and the plot thickens.
My main criticism is the ending; it was quite sudden and blunt.
Nevertheless, this was a "big" action film that I quite enjoyed, even though it is littered with cliches.

We Bought A Zoo
A delightful little film for all ages starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johannson.
The child actors were talented, and it is a simple and hopeful story.
It was emotional and funny and there were animals too which was a bonus especially if you are an animal lover!
Predictable at times, but still solid.
