Regarding Henry

My dad suggested I watch it because he also loves it. Henry is a hard working lawyer at the top of his career. His whole life is about work and social status. Then, something happens that changes everything and he must decide who he wants to be after all. The movie has a very simple, but meaningful message about what's really important in life. It's presented in a dramatic way with comical moments thrown in, just as life really plays out. Harrison Ford and Annette Bening are excellent as usual. Mikki Allen plays the daughter, Rachel, in a performance way beyond her years that was just unbelievable. I highly recommend this if you're looking to be inspired or just need a pick-me-up when you're down.

The Danish Girl

The story could have been very dramatic and deeply touching, as it is a true story of both the internal conflicts of a man and the deep love of a woman to her partner. Unfortunately the meticulous attention to image rather than screenplay (to me) resulted in a quite cold and un- engaging movie, where beautiful costumes, interiors and landscapes are the only highlights. I found that even the acting of the brilliant young Eddie Redmayne was not that good, as his constant smiles and shy blinking eyes after a while seem to be the only stratagem he has to portray such a complex character (and after the first dozen of them I couldn't stand it anymore). A more sophisticated psychological portrait of the main character and a more dramatic rendition of his/her troubled soul would have given more solidity to a movie which seems too superficial.

At Middleton

At Middleton shows what seems to be forgotten in contemporary movie-making: Actors performing the art of acting in front of a camera. There is an incredible chemistry between Andy Garcia and Vera Farmiga, culminating in the scene where they participate in a class led by Mirjana Jokovic.

This is a small movie that has a lot of pleasant surprises...

Creed

First off let me say that I have been a life long Rocky fan. With that being said I went into this film very cautious as almost the entire cast and crew were brand new. The trailers looked good, but today a good trailer is not necessarily an indicator of a good film. Sylvester Stallone killed it as a much older and more breakable Rocky. Michael B. Jordan's performance was as good if not better than Sly's. I think that from this day forward anytime I see Jordan, I will think of him as Creed and not whatever character he is playing. The story was engrossing and well thought out. The film pays a great amount of respect to the Rocky films while at the same time carving out it's own place in boxing film history. Honestly I have no idea how accessible this film would be to someone who's never seen a Rocky film, but I think the way the story flows it wouldn't be too much of an issue. Again, highly recommended.

Star Wars : The Force Awakens

I liked the introduction of new characters as well as reviving the older ones. This creates a huge nostalgia trip and gives you a very familiar setting.

The story is nothing new granted and I can understand avid Star Wars fans who are well versed in the expanded Star Wars universe that maybe disappointed. Having said that as a stand alone film it is far from disappointing and for the younger audience this is a new story.

What we end up with in story terms is a bit of a reboot of a New Hope with slightly different elements. This is not a terrible thing as for older fans its a great nostalgia trip and for newer fans its a great introduction to the Star Wars universe.

I just hope that the following films can find some emotion and spirit that is somewhat lacking in the Force Awakens.

7

Bajirao Mastani

Khamoshi, Black, Guzarish, Devdas and now Bajirao Mastani.

This enigma called Sanjay Leela Bhansali lives only so that he just make films which lives forever. With a stellar cast he unfolds another epic love story, 'Bajirao Mastani', which has been a 12-year long dream said by Sanjay. One of the best Directors of Hindi Films, his vision is big and presentation is a class.

The music of 'Bajirao Mastani' is very pure and quite amazing. Beautiful music, beautiful locations, mind-blowing costume and very energetic. Never saw a beginning of a movie as engaging as Bajirao Mastani. Its an epic film that leaves you wanting for more. I say, you must watch.

8.5

In The Heart Of The Sea

This is the most simple and quick review I can give you about this movie. It's like it moves in slow motion. It's another rehash of a book that has been made into a movie several times each time one more boring and unoriginal then the rest. Why they keep rehashing it I have no idea. The first 30 minutes of the movie can probably be skipped as not much really happens. The last 30 minutes are like pointless dribble. There is a little bit of action from a whale attack and then it's pretty much back to a snooze fest. No special effects can save how boring this movie is. No acting can save how bad the script was.

Bridge of Spies

Don't be fooled by the title. Make sure you know what you're getting yourself into when you watch this film. Bridge of Spies is literally about the Cold War Bridge of Spies, where Soviet/US spies were exchanged through negotiations.

Bridge of Spies is really a historical/legal drama. And based on my preliminary research, they seem to be getting most of their facts right. Obviously a little bit embellished for Hollywood's sake, Bridge of Spies does a fine job as a historical docudrama. There is a lot of talking, but it's meaningful talking. At times, the film can be a little slow {opening scene, especially}, but give it a chance and you might enjoy it. I really liked it, and Tom Hanks is on a different level, all the time.

The Hunger Games:Mockingjay Part 2

Very disappointed. It limped along with being stretched in areas that just made it boring. Too many long pauses and "rest periods". There was no need for Part 2 from what has been put out. It should have concluded as one third installment. It seemed even the actors wanted be working on something else than this elongated (2 hours plus for what should have bee a 30 minute finally on the end of Part 1. The film was very predictable all along and besides some battle scenes and scary "Mutts" - the rest was just meandering along.

Black Mass

Good acting, horrible execution.

This movie completely failed to deliver on plot, with no connections from one scene to the next and no excitement. There was not even a climax. The lack of emotion and plot, with the only focus being on Whitey Bulger's bad side, holds this movie back from offering anything compelling. It was just bad.

Steve Jobs

This movie is a dramatisation, based on facts.

Rapid-fire dialogue with 2 conversations going on at the same time made this very authentic and real.

They also get the small emotional moments right as well. Some of the best moments are between Steve and his daughter.

The directing and editing is masterful. I liked the choice to shoot on different formats for the different years and the flashback scenes punctuate the drama on screen perfectly.

All the actors do a fine job, Fassbender is amazing.

Burnt

Definitely worth seeing if you enjoy fine dining or are simply a Bradley Cooper fan. Convincing performances by a great cast. Cooper is brilliant and continues to reveal the depth of his talent.

Burnt offers a unique perspective and behind the scenes peek into professional kitchens, which I found fascinating and gave me a new appreciation for the demands, artistry, and creative genius of great chefs.

The message on the need for professional counseling and support for someone whose life has self-destructed through substance abuse was in balance. Watching Cooper's character struggle to start anew while still afraid to face his demons is a story line relevant to many.

S.P.E.C.T.R.E.

Bond is back just as we are used to, but thanks to the enormous hype following the great Skyfall, it is not as good as expected.

Let me start with the actors. Overall good performances, however Craig does not feel as inspired as Bond in this one, and I also think there should have been more to Waltz' role as Oberhauser, considering his reputation of delivering great supporting roles.

When it comes to the story, it is action-packed and exciting, just what we expect from these movies. But after the magnificent opening-scenes in Mexico with the costumes and huge crowd, I just feel that the rest of the movie was lacking the same feeling to the rest of the scenes and settings, and therefore the movie lost some of its greatness. In addition the car-chase and the meetings between Bond and Hinx where not that spectacular.

So, to sum it up, the movie delivers what you're expecting, but unfortunately nothing more.

He Named Me Malala

Malala is a noteworthy individual who deserves to be documented. Like she says in the movie, her story is every girls story, and it deserves to me told.

My favorite part of this documentary was getting to know her from a more personal side. Incidentally, she now lives in the same city as me in the UK. It was also interesting to learn of the story of her father; facts I did not know before.

To me it was what all of us have in common with Malala that makes this documentary special, and in return makes everything that she has done inspirational.

Go see it and get inspired.

8

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania

I am usually pretty lenient with films and rarely find films to be this bad. But Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania takes some of the most overused concepts in Bollywood films and puts it in one film. While the movie may be able to make money, it is just another cliche movie. The story line is absolute garbage, and the actors are not able to make up for it. Yes, both Alia and Varun look great in the film, but I personally care for their acting. Even the music is not up to par. The bottom line is that this movie does not live up to its hype and does no justice to Dharma Productions.

4

Ek Villain

Familiar with the sory as it is a copy of a Korean Movie, "I Saw the Devil." Regardless of where the plot is derived from it was an enjoyable watch. The non-linear plot format was intriguing, especially when compared to modern and rather stale mainstream Bollywood films. The various characterisations as well as embedded parallelism and circular plot progression can also provide good post-movie conversations.

6.5

Ant-Man

From the start I had a feeling this wasn't going to be good. With the other Marvel movies, even if they weren't good films, the trailer at least made it seem fun. But with the Ant-Man trailer I saw nothing to pique my interest. The good reviews gave me hope that the movie was good after all but I should have trusted my gut instead.

Now, as I look back on Ant-Man, the only thing that comes to mind is the boredom I experienced. The story has no stakes.

5

Premium Rush

It's not a 10 star film but it is a fun ride with action that makes up for a few flaws in plot and the flow of storyline. The best issue in this film is almost constant action and wild biking through the New York streets. One of the elements that were new to the screen and highly workable were the sudden stop of action to follow the split-second decision making of a messenger/biker. So, if you're looking for a thrill ride and a fun film then go see it. Enjoy the earthy feel of the cameras that capture the life of a messenger on two wheels competing with trucks, cabs, and cops.

The Lobster

There's no chance that you'll see a film as weird as The Lobster this whole year. In what is effectively an indie art-house piece, you get a completely insane and almost unfathomable world filled with more and more absurdities everywhere you look. However, it's such an incredibly unique and eye-catching film that it's still hugely engrossing and surprisingly entertaining to watch.

This is definitely a cult film for the ages, but won't be a big hit with general audiences.

7.5

Crimson Peak

This movie showcases del Toro's unique skill for beauty and suspense.

The sets, costumes and general atmosphere are sumptuous in that signature del Toro way. The luxurious train on the heroine's robe that audibly thumps behind her as she sweeps down the staircase? Yes, please. There is a nod to all the images our minds ever conjured while reading fairy tales. The rich colours, the music, the textures all help draw us in to this world and settle us in for the story.

I was impressed with Jessica Chastain's talent for conveying two conflicting emotions at once, all playing out on her face.

Spy

I was really looking forward to seeing this comedy after reading some of the reviews. However, I ended up disappointed on the whole, but it looks like I'm somewhere in the middle between the raves and the scathing criticism.

It can be quite silly at times, yet I also found some scenes funny.

Overall, I believe there might be worse ways to spend an evening than to watch this fairly amusing spy comedy. There is an all-star cast also featuring a rather toned-down Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham and Rose Byrne.

Finally for those that are interested, I would pay attention to the language warnings in the "R" rating, as it's graphic and prolific throughout the movie!

6

I Spit On Your Grave 3

Compared to the first two movies, this was not as good and not as graphic.

What made this movie fun to watch is it didn't use the same formula as the first one because instead it grew out of the mindless gore section and into a more serious story and relates to some real life issues.

Performances were good, but could have been better. A few cliches could have been avoided. Perhaps there could be a 4th?!

The Gift

As Joel Edgerton's directorial debut, it's impressive, considering the sense of craft going on behind the camera. The y pacing is that of a slow burn, but it's never dull. The premise is also deceptively simple, turning more intricate and involving as the film progresses.

Edgerton, who also wrote the screenplay, refuses to adhere to genre conventions, constantly subverting audience's expectations on how the story plays out. Red herrings, plot twists, shifting perspectives, and moral ambiguity ensue, but they never feel cheap. Like the best thrillers, The Gift evolves naturally and realistically. Edgerton and Rebecca Hall are great, but it is Jason Bateman who impresseses in a totally different guise. As a natural comedian actor, he plays one of his rare, serious roles to terrific effect.

The Walk

The Walk is a 2015 American 3D biographical drama film directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Christopher Browne and Zemeckis. It is based on the story of French high-wire artist Philippe Petit's walk between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center on August 7, 1974.

This terrific movie has all the elements of success: true story, great acting, good drama, sweet romance and a nice comedy.

The 3D Special Effects Are excellent and the direction was great.

This PG Movie Is A real recommended masterpiece that will enchant adults, teens and children.

Truly deserves 10 out of 10!

Macbeth

I could probably get past the accents if it wasn't for the mumbling. The mumbling and whispery tones made it almost unintelligible. I say almost because if I totally focused I could make out every second word but that's just too much hassle for me, especially when in surround sound in a cinema where things should be audible. So I guess if I wanted to watch a movie without dialogue, just watch a silent movie.

Visuals and dialogue in a movie that's meant to have dialogue should compliment each other but unfortunately this didn't do it for me and many many other people. For the first time in years I left the screening after half an hour.

2

The Martian

The Martian is a new Ridley Scott classic, featuring his best work in years, the best performance I've ever seen from Matt Damon, an outstanding supporting cast, a surprisingly funny screenplay from Daredevil creator Drew Goddard, and a great narrative that ties the film together beautifully.

Based on the novel, this does an excellent job. Visuals are stunning and seems so "real." Die hard fans of Damon (like me) will love this.

For me, this has outdone Gravity!

The Intern

I expected a fun, neat comedy but what I experienced was so much more: a great plot, brilliantly executed and acted. The jokes and fun parts were on point, and the world the movie created felt very authentic, immersive and a joy to watch on the big screen - this was helped by amazing costuming and cinematography.

The entire cast had very strong chemistry between them, and both Hathaway and De Niro were wonderful.

Overall an awesome, heartwarming movie. I walked out of the movie theater with a smile.

8.5

Captive

Great performances by David Oyelowo and Kate Mara. The two created good chemistry on the screen.

David Oyelow is a fine actor. I was really drawn in at watching him play Nicols. It was very intriguing watching him showcase the many levels of the character his is performing.

It was a compelling story based on true events which made it more realistic and more satisfying.

7

Sicario

The film has a slow pace and it takes its time building up to the main point of the story. The final scene with Emily Blunt and Benicio Del Toro is among the best that I have seen this year.

Sicario's combination of gruesome violence and minimal soundtrack creates this strange atmosphere to the film. It is amidst the most depressing I've see. Now I'm not talking about tear-jerking sad films, but about that sort of bleak hopelessness that is hard to get right.

Overall, Sicario might not be a film for everyone but I think it will definitely have a place amongst this year's best.

Everest

Everest is a film that you know what you are going to get and it doesn't disappoint in that aspect. In fact, Everest may be something more then your typical Hollywood disaster film, with unpredictable moments and truly distressing, realistic scenes. However, with the fast paced action, you lose the ability to really connect with some pivotal characters and the film glosses over so many potentially interesting characters, that when some of them meet their demise, you care very little about their deaths.

Unlike other films of it's caliber, Everest manages to surprise and makes you positively invested in the story.

Maze Runner : The Scorch Trials

This movie definitely exceeded my expectations. It definitely trumps Divergent by far, might even be on par with the Hunger Games. This movie was non-stop action, and mystery. It definitely succeeded in keeping me on edge wondering what was going to happen next. If you're contemplating whether or not you should watch it, do yourself a favour and watch it, believe me you will not regret it! I look forward to the final part of this trilogy!

Self/less

Every now and again you get a movie that just about ticks all the boxes and makes you feel OK about paying your hard earned cash to see it. Well this is one of those movies...

Plenty of twists at the beginning with an interesting immortality plot, but as you gradually get absorbed into it, you start to realise how the movie will play out half way through, sadly it took that course, which is a little disappointing.

Overall the film contained a lot of successful elements mixed into the movie but was just predictable that's all.

Southpaw

Southpaw is a drama/sports film directed by Antoine Fuqua and stars Jake Gyllenhaal. Although clichéd, the way the story of this film is told is what makes it great. The acting was great throughout the film especially by Gyllenhaal and surprisingly, the young child actor,Oona Laurence was fantastic. The boxing scenes themselves were shot very well and did a good job of really putting you in the shoes of the fighters. The dramatic scenes were done very well also.

8

No Escape

No Escape delivers an extreme high-tension, nerve shredding thriller that will keep you at the edge of your seat throughout the movie. The concept of this movie is pretty simple – save yourself and your family from the riots and political uprising.

No Escape is commendable for its style of execution, every single scene and frame you see on screen is relevant and excellently shot.

Really good, would watch again.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

I must admit after seeing the trailers for The Man From Uncle I was excited but was unsure whether it would live up to initial promise.

Well the potential delivers, not only is this a great tribute to the TV series but this is a really enjoyable film in it's own right.

The characters are funny and engaging - there is a lot of really snappy interchanges between them and they are all likable and good fun to see on screen. Both Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer are really well suited to their parts and have great banter. Alicia Vikander is brilliant as well, and really adds spice to a role that might have been nothing with someone else.

The storyline is also actually good in a 60's spy show / film kind of way. And finally it looks and sounds great with cracking music and a gorgeous look. I think this is probably Guy Richie's most complete film and it would be shame if it doesn't do well enough to warrant a sequel as I would really love to see more of their adventures.

Highly recommended!

9

Mission Impossible - Rogue Nation

Everything about that movie was well balanced.

It had the right amount of every element that would make a movie simply brilliant! This sequel for me, was definitely the best Mission movie yet. And at the same time it recalls so many details from the first mission impossible movie. And most of all the action. Every action scene in this movie was breathtaking and there will be moments when you would just want to get up and start clapping. They did a good amount of the stunts without CGI and that will make you appreciate the action even more. Kudos to Simon Pegg for his impeccable timing for humour.

8.5

Wrong Number

Just when I think Pakistani movies are heading in the right direction they come up with stuff like this.

This movie has nothing going for it, the plot, the acting, the screenplay, the direction, nothing is worth mentioning and there was absolutely no character development or chemistry whatsoever in fact I've seen cave paintings with better stories than this movie.

4

Bajrangi Bhaijaan

This is undoubtedly Salman Khan's best movie ever with one of the best stories presented on the Bollywood big screen in the past decade. Excellent performances by each and every member of the cast, particularly Nawazuddin and the little charming girl - Harshaali. The movie is a smoothly paced affair and highly entertaining and engaging. It does well for Indo-Pak relations which is always a positive in the 21st century.

Ted 2

Ted 2 does exactly what it set out to do. It delivers a bunch of laughs built primarily on crude, in-your-face humour and it doesn't take itself too seriously. The first movie was a genuinely good movie in addition to being hilarious. Instead, MacFarlane turns this movie into a live-action version of Family Guy. The plot is choppy and it essentially feels like a series of random skits, pieced together to form the semblance of some over-arching plot. It was easily worth watching because it was hilarious but I expected a quality film closer to that of the first one.

Human Centipede 3

I was genuinely expecting more of the same. A horrific and disturbing body modification style horror but I actually found myself becoming bored with the incessant and insipid screaming of Dieter Laser and the profoundly bad acting of Laurence Harvey.

The First two movies were polemical and somewhat uncomfortable to watch. They were disturbing and, in many ways, were unique.

This final installment was just annoying to watch. It did not shock and the actual, 'centipede' part didn't even happen until very late in the movie.

This movie was a massive let down and the radical departure from the stylistic form of the first two movies ruined it in my eyes.

Let us hope this really is the last sequence.

2

Terminator: Genisys

Arnold was the only character who made this movie watchable.

Imagine this movie without him.

I'm really disappointed in the cast and casting, I don't blame the actors, I blame the director.

Sara Connor was played awfully, Jason Clarke was a little bit better and Jai Courtney was somewhere in between.

Lack of facial expressions, poor dialogues, same old stunts and special effects.

Thank you Arnold for keeping this movie alive!

Mr Holmes

Ian McKellen plays Sherlock Holmes as a 60 y/o and a 93 y/o. Both are excellent as without layers of makeup he gets the physicality of both roles perfect.

This movie is all about Ian McKellen and his acting ability... and it is a masterclass.

Beautifully shot, lots of external shots and small cast show off the small budget.

A little slow for my liking though, but all comes good in the end.

Entourage

The worst film in the history of worst films EVER? Awful Awful film AVOID! All it is is an excust for a lot of "stars" to prance about with a lot of would be starlets.

If you are looking for some cheap thrills or have a mentality of less than one then you might enjoy but for anyone who enjoys a good film and something approaching a storyline you will be wasting your ticket money.

1

Jurrasic World

Even though this movie is the sequel to the Jurassic's I think people need to go into the movie with an open mind not ready to judge it and compare it to the old movies. This movie already has such an added pressure of living up to those classics, that its almost an impossible task to do so from the get go. The last time i watched the old Jurassic's where when they were released so you definitely don't have to remember or have watched those before seeing this movie.

All in all Its not an amazing mind blowing movie but its definitely not bad either, I think its just a really good movie with amazing and realistic looking dinosaurs!

7

San Andreas

An apocalyptic film isn't exactly a new or unique idea but this one still pulled it off. If you're a bit of an action-junkie like myself, you'll probably like this one with its non-stop action right through the film. While some of it may seem a little over the top, it is what it is. A "Rock" action film. I also didn't mind the rest of the cast in their roles and everyone seemed to pull their weight.

Danny Collins

What a charming, funny, likeable, moving little movie. One of the best ones I've seen in 2015 so far.

It's a gift for Pacino fans. He's fantastic here. Impossible not to like his performance.

The entire cast was great. Great chemistry between Pacino and Bening, Pacino and Plummer, Pacino and Cannavale.

It avoided the cheesy side of things that would have been really easy to fall into.

It's a fine film with a lot of laugh out loud moments and a surprisingly moving ending.

Big Hero 6

Big Hero 6 is hands down one of the best animated films I've ever seen and maybe the best non-Pixar film since The Lion King. The realism in the animation, while not losing the charm associated with the genre, is stunning, the humanity and emotion in the film is superior to most live action films you'll see, and the story is fresh and entertaining. It combines humor with sadness with action to make for an exciting viewing experience. They also make you absolutely love Baymax, the big, white, puffy looking marsh mellow robot in all the advertisements. Overall, this movie is suitable for people of all ages, genders, cultural backgrounds, etc. Jump into San Fransokyo and get ready for a great film.

8.5

Tommorrowland

I have a problem. The pacing is incredibly slow. Nothing really ever actually happens. It's just 'there' the whole time and is quite remarkably boring at times. It's quite idiotic in its moral. Yes the world is going to hell blablabla but, even if aimed at 6 year olds, there are better & more subtle ways to get the point across. So yes, very disappointed. Acting was good; visuals were nice but, at the end of the day, I was pretty bored for 2+ hours.

The Age of Adaline

I have been looking forward to this film because of the story line. There are so many things to like about it - the flashbacks are well done and so believable. The costumes are so fun to watch. I do not think I have seen Blake Lively act before and I was clearly entranced by her performance. She carries the film so well and is so quiet and well done. I liked the actors - Michaeil Haisman is believable. Harrison Ford did some amazing scenes! This story could have been presented in such a different manner - director tells is beautifully. I love the ending.

Piku

Not your bog-standard bollywood movie. Its a very real drama, with excellent acting from all. The whole team gel extremely well and provide a genuine story.

The main theme is about the health issues of one of the characters and the movie seems to dwell on this abit too much in my opinion.

Other than that, the story is light-hearted and I am sure many can relate to it.

Worth a watch.

7

Mad Max : Fury Road

Great film, so fast-paced it makes every other film out there look slow and old-fashioned. Charlize Theron is great, Tom Hardy is a bit wooden, but the stunts are really where the film shines. It's hard to think of a better action road movie. It has all the intensity and perversity of the MAD MAX and THE ROAD WARRIOR, but amped up to new heights of craziness.

Big Game

Big Game is a 90 minute bubblegum movie. At first the idea is quite good but within 20 minutes a lot of the script is rushed and a bit predictable. Sam Jackson seems to be in it for the pay packet and the cast just play the part.

Plot holes galore here but all films can't be classics. It plods along nicely with a few good moments but 1 or 2 scenes get a bit laboured and silly.

Fifty Shades of Grey

I think it's a major advantage in watching this film to have never read the books.

I was greatly surprised to find myself laughing early on-not at the movie itself, but at a particular moment in it that was intended to be funny. It was drawing me in, almost against my will. As it went on, I began liking the character of Anastasia. Christian may have been a little eye-rolling here and there, but I still bought into him. I get why some people are trashing this film-partly because the source material is absolute garbage-but it's actually a pretty interesting character study.

Divergent

Divergent is brought to life on the big screen from the director who brought us "Limitless" and "The Illusionist." Are we seeing something of similar essence with the "Hunger Games" series? Yes. However, my personal take was that the characters were more engaging and the plot was as well in this film. Shailene is excellent at the helm, and really brings forth a convincing portrayal of a heroine battling in a world where chaos and tragedy envelope the characters. Her graceful emergence from shy personality to dominance is done artfully and really speaks to her ability as an actress.

7

Blade Runner - The Final Cut

OK, I admit...the first time I watched this movie I hated it. I was 15 years old and had expected an action-packed sci-fi adventure. Blade Runner is not such a film. But I am grateful for this, for after maturing a bit and rewatching the latest Final Cut 23 years later, I discovered its greatness. It is not a traditional sci-fi movie, it's a touching drama about the value of life and the importance of making the most of what you've got. One of the most important themes in the film is the question of what is more valuable - humans without emotions, or machines with? The film gives no answer - it just opens our eyes and makes us aware that we should be grateful for being alive.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Everything seems so bland. The constant jibe of who gets the last word in seems forced, predictable and acts like an edit for the next scene.

The romantic angle that was introduced lacks chemistry. From out of nowhere, the characters involved suddenly had an interest for one another? Without any build up of it in past movies nor in this one, it just felt empty.

Camera angles that were purposefully shot for the intentional thrill of 3D is like any other angles used in any other 3D-movie-going-experience.

All in all...it is still watchable. It just left a disdain taste of yet another repetition of the Marvel formula.

6

Child 44

Confusing and bloated post WWII crime drama about a Soviet military policeman embroiled in a lengthy investigation of a series of child murders while the Stalin-set government attempts a cover up of a serial killer loose. The screenplay by is all over the place and never finding its exact groove: action thriller? murder mystery? hero redemption flick?

The Imitation Game

Benedict Cumberbatch delivers the performance of his career in this, I've always been a fan of him but I never expected to see him act as stunning as he does here, every line of dialogue he blurts is powerful and you can tell he really means it, hopefully he will get more great roles like this in the future. Dramatic and uplifting, the Imitation Game is an outstanding film that I would recommend to anyone looking for a good biography film or drama.

John Wick

John Wick adds hardly a story, no character development, no needless character or background, no misplaced drama, no misplaced humor and not too much eye candy, nothing of that. What John Wick offers is action, action and more action. In fact, it is one long action scene, with some lines and close ups added. But that is not a problem. The directors promise action and deliver. While delivering they made it look good and convincing, without trying to be more, and they're smart enough to give the movie a satisfying beginning and ending.

And for those who claim that Keanu Reeves is a horrible actor..... you are right. But his blank expression is perfect for this movie. Leave the acting to the bad guys and the delicious guest part for Willem Dafoe.

If you're tired of movies with forced drama or loaded with CGI, John Wick will be a pleasant wake-up call.

Cinderella

At first, I was not necessarily convinced that a Cinderella live action film would be interesting but Kenneth Branagh at the director's chair & Cate Blanchett as the stepmother made me rethink my position. The project became less of a silly little film with these two on board.

Cinderella was a beautiful film, very tasteful, colorful, touching and classy. It's a very different Cinderella but it had the spirit of the animated film. The stepmother, Cinderella herself, and the prince were different, they had more substance, they multidimensional and that's mostly true for the stepmother and the prince.

The ensemble cast really elevated the film, they embodied the characters we came to know and love but portrayed them in quite a unique way.

Really enjoyed it - Lily James is my new favourite Brit!

Fast and Furious 7

By about 2009 when 'Fast & Furious' was released, the franchise had slowly began to veer away from its initial focus of street racing and instead began to turn its attention to the action genre and over-the-top big budget sequences. However along with this change of style, the franchise was actually getting better and better with each film. Today I saw the most recent instalment in the cinema... talk about action-packed!

Fast & Furious 7 is a no-holds, over-the-top and mindless action film, but this aside, it is an extremely entertaining and fun film to watch. With an all-star cast and some brilliant action sequences, 'Fast & Furious 7' is proof that certain franchises can continually make great movies. The most notable moment however in the entire film is the emotional and respectful ending during the send-off of Paul Walker, the film finishing with a montage of Walker in the previous six films, finishing with just two words, "For Paul."

Night at the Museum : Secret of the Tomb

So the final movie in the trilogy. When the first movie came I thought it was a nice idea and then its sequel was so bad without any further innovative ideas to add up. I was not expecting anything from the third movie, but it was surprisingly good.

Very happy to see Robin Williams one final time. What a great actor, lucky we had him in our time.

There are some good laughs, action and adventure. The story is not too bad and the ending wraps things up nicely.

Wild Card

Poor effort. don't think Jason Statham had his heart in it. Poor show by the director.

Could have been so much better, intense, interesting. Not enough development/space for any other character.

Overall, for the avid Statham fan only. Otherwise, don't bother.

Run All Night

This movie kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The script was average, the editing very good, the camera work great, the music terrific, and the acting was phenomenal!

Go, you won't be disappointed. There is a great car chase that can hold its own with the best. It's a gangster movie, so expect lots of shoot-em-up scenes. Gory as they were, they were consistent with all the scenes in the film, so after a short time they became inconsequential and I focused on the amazing acting.

Chappie

Chappie is a fun ride. It has it's interesting moments, to say the least.

If you liked District 9, you'll like this one too. District 9 had a lot more likable characters and emotional ties. Chappie has too many forgettable characters, and a lot of characters that will confuse you.

Despite any little criticisms I might have, Chappie is much more relatable to District 9 than Elysium.

It's not bad, but not amazing either!

Kill The Messenger

Even though I'd never heard of Gary Webb, I wanted to see the movie because the story sounded interesting and I enjoy movies based on true events. I'm wiser for having watched it, but to call it a movie might be a stretch. It's almost like the director didn't want to use creative license, so he just left stuff out. There's a focus on Webb the family man, but hardly enough to endear the viewer to him or his family. There's a focus on his investigative reporting, but its not like the movie followed the events step-by-step, which would have been great. Then, to top it all off, they plug Ray Liotta and Andy Garcia in as pivotal figures to Webb's investigation, but they only get like 5 minutes of screen time. You expect to see them again at some point but never do. Again, the decision to make a film on this subject was great, the vision for the movie, however, doesn't do the subject matter justice. Great subject, average movie.

Focus

I really enjoyed Focus. It has a few small problems, but was good.

The story felt original and was hard to predict, making the twists even better and more shocking. Even if they were a tiny bit forced.

The acting is really good. Both Will and Margot did a great job!

There are some inconsistencies and some added drama that takes the audience out of reality a little, but it was compelling, well-made, and entertaining!

The Water Diviner

Even though Russell Crowe gave us an good or great performance as an actor but his directing is so much different as day and night , it's seems like he doesn't know the proper or the correct way to tell the story and make it interesting since the way of his storytelling now is so out dated feels empty and lack of creativity which is the worst thing that can happen when you're the director.

I felt the film was littered with flaws. Only good thing was the injection of culture into it.

Not bad and not great.

Cake

This movie isn't for everybody. It is a slow starter. It's a while before you feel anything for Jennifer Aniston's character. This is undoubtedly her finest performance on the big screen to date.

There's many unanswered questions early on in the movie, but bear with it, you get the answers later on! The movie also treats its audience with intelligence. It's not a life-changing movie, but it is a movie of hope. You do learn to love her character by the end. It is a worthwhile movie. Well, for me it was.

The Interview

I did not find this "comedy" to be funny. Awful from the start to the bitter end.

People will go and see it and it is a shame that for such a large audience the film delivers only juvenile humour, bad acting, stupidity at every turn and no intelligent message. Tasteless and violent sequences serve no purpose. The movie will make money and unfortunately more movies like this will be made by Hollywood.

I understand and support why the movie had to be shown but unfortunately it is an opportunity missed to treat the topic with some intelligence.

1

Whiplash

Whiplash is low budget film making at its finest, and surely promises big things from rookie director/writer Damien Chazelle. Seeing this film in the theatre was the first time this year that I was completely enraptured.

The film is loaded with tension and it did not let up from the very first scene, especially as soon as the incredible J.K. Simmons enters. Simmons, along with Miles Teller have some of the best on screen chemistry I've seen. They're connected; one cannot act without it affecting the other. The film is almost entirely focused on this relationship, and the simplicity definitely services the film. I hope people will go and see it…

St Vincent

Bill Murray shows his acting range in this film by playing a despicable human being that you can't help but to like, as Vincent, an angry old man who takes on the job of a babysitter to his new neighbour's young son in order to make some extra cash he surely needs.

Melissa McCartney, who plays the neighbour is also in the movie and plays a differnt role and does it well. I was getting fed up of her typical sterotypical and cliched roles lately.

The kid is also very good and it is a very genuine down to earth movie.

7.5

Kingsman

This film is very good and different. The action sequences are very entertaining, keeps you on the edge of your seat. The plot was a little too drawn out, yet had some very good twists.

The idea of a SIM card that can control people is very good. The one major area where this film failed for me was the CGI. The explosions looked horrendous. It was obvious when things were CGI'd.

The script was very well written and characters were very well developed.

Firth played his character to perfection, Caine was alright and I believe that Taron Egerton has a very promising future in action. The standout character has to be Samuel L Jackson; the lisp is absolutely brilliant.

Everly

To me this is the worst movie I have ever seen in a long time. I regret the fact that it is Salma Hayek who stars in it. Awful settings, awful scenario, just overall plain awful. She manages to kill at least 80 people (all of whom top mafia), and then, when finally it would be time for her to reunite with her girl, she dies too (which should have happened in the beginning given the severity of the situation).

A movie, so random, so pointless, and disturbing, that all it does is it leaves a bad taste in your mouth, and the painful sensation that you will never get the time you invested watching it, back.

Two States

Well the movie is good overall and is a light romantic comedy. Its worth watch for one time only as it is very cliched and predictable.

The actors were perfect for the role in my opinion and also Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt did a good job. Once you realise the pattern, the movie drags and the end result is clear. There was a lack of suspense.

Ex Machina

An excellent and thought provoking film.

The film moves at a good pace throughout getting to the main storyline early on. The most noticeable aspects of the film early on are the location, sets and special affects.

Domhnall Gleeson plays 'Caleb' and takes us through the film, leading us along the way to a conclusion that is eventually twisted at the end. Though he is very good in the role he is over shadowed by Oscar Isaac (Nathan) who created Ava, superbly played by Alicia Vikander, who over shadows them both.

Wild

This movie is a beautifully written, directed, and acted portrayal of the means to which we must sometimes go to rid ourselves of internal demons that hold us back from moving forward with our lives.

Reese Witherspoon is brilliant as Cheryl and Laura Dern shines as her ailing Mother. He dealings with others from her past as well as new people she befriends on her journey all add to the real feel of this film. It feels natural, not Hollywood. It has no need to rely on fake action or heroics. Just the portrayal of a real person, with a real life and struggles. I could have sat there for much longer, watching her come to terms with the past and opening herself to her future. Great music, great supporting characters, lush scenery.

A Most Violent Year

Well this one's shot well, the cast nail the parts, but from start to finish you are waiting for the film to come to life, and unfortunately it just never does.

Some people will appreciate this film much more than others, but for me it was average at best. The main reason we all watch films and television, is to be entertained, and unfortunately with A Most Violent Year, it feels like we have been left wanting.

You never really get to appreciate 1980s New York, a couple of panoramic skylines don't really cut it. With a bit more substance to the story, better visuals & some period music, this film could & should have been much better.

Birdman

A bunch of very good actors, all wasted in an indulgent script and directing.

The absolutely stupid plot, that takes ages to go nowhere, a film where the film maker is saying very loudly and in a very boring way, look how clever I am, why this has been praised by critics is beyond me. Actually to be honest I have now long given up on what critics say and write about a film. Virtually critic on both sides of the Atlantic seem to have lost any sense of what is good or bad. The amount of critically endorsed films that I have thought to be not bad but very bad seems to be growing each year.

American Sniper

American Sniper is yet another example of why more stories should be told through a mini-series, as opposed to a 2+ hour traditional film format, the story did little to no justice on Kyle's impressive accomplishments, both militarily and as a man. The result was a very jumpy and shallow viewing experience where you didn't feel a connection to Kyle's SEAL teammates or his wife, Taya. The actors, namely Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller, did the best job they possibly could've done with the script they were given. The script was the best it could've been when trying to fit into the clichéd 2-hour time slot.

Ultimately, this review should end on a high note though, so I will point out the strongest element of the film: the ending. The closing 10+ minutes are incredibly moving and deliver, what I believe was the entire purpose of the film itself. They leave you in awe of the man, the myth, the legend.

7

Foxcatcher

This movie is a complete disappointment. I was so excited to see it after watching the trailers and knowing that Steve Carell was in it, I think he has great potential as a dramatic actor. The movie has a lot of awkward scenes and doesn't give you any back story into the characters. There's a lot of things that don't make sense and that are never explained.

The movies suffers from bad direction and it was not as good as it should have been. Whilst I recognise that this story is based on real events, not much happened. It was a very slow paced and boring film unfortunately.

Before I Go To Sleep

A satisfying, keeps-you-guessing thriller. While amnesia is certainly not the most original of plot devices, there's something unique here in terms of truly portraying the emotional, daily hell an amnesiac and loved ones must suffer. This is aided, by no small means, by strong performances by Colin Firth and especially Nicole Kidman.

The plot definitely has suspense and there are sufficient twists and turns to ensure that you truly can not predict the outcome. There's also a nice combination of languid pacing intermixed with truly jarring and lurid scenes. In some ways this had a dream-like (or, take your pick, nightmarish) quality in tone.

A few plot holes make themselves known by the movie's end, but when a thriller ushers you out the theater door while still meditating on memory, marriage, and trust...I'd say that's a job well done.

7

Taken 3

Taken 3 is a step down from Taken 2, itself a lesser film than the original. But that is to be expected and forgiven. The title could be considered an unimaginative misnomer, but it makes marketing sense.

The addition of Forest Whitaker as a smart cop is for me something of a saving grace since Taken 3 offers up absurdities without question. On reflection, however, the plot has enough coherence to do the trilogy justice. Moreover, it is a joy to see Liam Neeson in this role again.

The director Olivier Megaton has an irksome penchant for frenetic, up-close, disorienting action sequences whereby shots are rarely longer than two seconds. He was a little better in this regard for Taken 2, which had the benefit of superior choreography.

So if you loved the first one and were unimpressed by the second one, best not bother with this one.

6

The Theory Of Everything

What a wonderful accomplishment of a film which brings such depth and beauty to the life/love story of Stephen and Jane Hawking. The film is adapted from her novel on their life and brings forth much of the love and tenacity necessary to care for and love someone going through great physical struggles over time.

Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones give fantastic and intimate portrayals of Stephen and Jane during their courtship and lives together. These two actors are absolutely, one hundred percent, PHENOMENAL in these two roles. Stephen Hawking is the role that Redmayne was born to play.
